Early morning tuning & just before concert time at Kendal Leisure Centre with a full house for Paul Lewis playing Beethoven’s 5th with the Northern Chamber Orchestra. The Lake District Music Festival Chorus, Kantos Chamber Choir are performing the 2nd half of the concert. 100 people onstage!

I do like a lanyard. This is my 19th consecutive year working for Lake District Summer Music & the 40th year of the festival. We have so much world class art and music in Cumbria.

Early tuning at Brewery Arts Kendal, before the stage set up for Joan as Policewoman playing tonight. The piano was sharp having expanded in the recent high humidity.

All day servicing this 1981 Steinway model B at St Mary Church Ambleside. Around 15 years ago, the piano was housed in a local college. I got wind in the trade that they were selling it in a few days time, the issue was it wasn’t theirs to sell. It had been gifted to “the people of Ambleside” not the college. I told local music luminaries about this & the sale was stopped at the last minute. The question then was, who were “the people of Ambleside“? It was agreed that the church would take the piano & promising students wouid be allowed to practise on it. It has also proved a popular alternative to the organ for worship. The piano has been very happy here & it’s my pleasure to still be looking after it after so many years.

The Newark School of Musical instrument Crafts was founded in 1972 teaching piano tuning and restoration, woodwind/brass making & repair & perhaps most famously violin making. It is the only college teaching these crafts to a high-level in the UK. I studied there in the 80s and owe my career to it. The entire school is to be shut down by its parent body, Lincoln College. Can we imagine a modern prosperous country that cannot support these crafts? Please sign the petition if you wish to help support opposition to this very sad & soulless closure.
