Why be embarrassed about being a naturist?

Taking the plunge and contributing to H&E can feel like a bigger step than it really is. For some readers, the thought of seeing their name in print raises an awkward question: What if someone I know sees it?

But why should being a naturist be a problem?

There’s nothing unusual about enjoying the freedom of being clothes-free, and every reader who is open about it helps make naturism a little more visible – and a little less mysterious – to everyone else.

You don’t necessarily have to become a campaigner or put your life story on display. Just share what you’re comfortable sharing. Write about your experiences, the places you have visited, or tell H&E what naturism means to you.

Model behaviour…

James Proctor has embarked on a new career path – as a n**e model for photographers and life drawing classes.

“Let me be clear before we start,” he says. “At 59 years old, I’m not exactly in the first flush of youth.

“At my age, with wrinkles here and a few saggy bits there, I certainly never expected that taking my clothes off in front of other people would become a full-time job. Yet, that is precisely what has happened: a new career as both a life and photographic model has opened my eyes to how people see an older man, and given me an entirely different perspective on my body.”

Bums on seats...

Matt and Megan created N**e Beach Map because they were tired of turning up at beaches without really knowing what to expect. Was nudity actually accepted? Where was the n**e section? Was the information online even still accurate?

What started as a travel tool for themselves has grown into a global resource built from firsthand visits, local knowledge, and submissions from people who actually use the beaches.

Now they’re building Beach Bums - a community around all of it.

It’s a place for people who are curious, experienced or somewhere in between. Members can ask questions, share experiences, discover new places, swap advice and help shape what N**e Beach Map becomes next.

Blind date?

Sometimes the biggest lessons come from someone who completely disagrees with you.

When Elizabeth Carrington invited a man she was dating into her naturist world, she expected curiosity. Instead, he left shocked, uncomfortable - and convinced naturism wasn't for him.

Are AI n**es killing naturist authenticity?

Naturism has spent decades trying to show the public that we’re real people, with real bodies and real communities. So why are many clubs and organisations now promoting themselves with fake ones?

AI-generated images may be polished, and less costly to produce, but they’re increasingly starting to look the same: perfect bodies, perfect landscapes, generic smiles and familiar clichés. Take away the logo and could you tell one naturist organisation from another?

As Evan Nicks argues in this month's H&E Naturist magazine, naturism's greatest marketing assets are its people, personalities, stories and creativity.

Many people don't reject naturism because they've tried it and hated it. They often never get that far.

That's the thinking behind Beyond Clothes, a new project from naturist resort owner Karie Jane, created to answer the questions people might be too embarrassed to ask.

From body confidence and etiquette to consent and those first-day nerves, it's designed for the curious, the cautious, and anyone wondering what naturism is really like.

The idea is simple: make first impressions less intimidating and replace myths with honest conversation.
