Big news in the village is that Moorcourt Fruit 's strawberry season has begun, and we all know that strawberry season also means that it's officially picnic season. Although this week has been a little miserable, we are hopeful it'll brighten up soon (and perhaps it gives us more time to plan our al fresco feasts!)

We are lucky to have so many fantastic local producers and suppliers for your picnic basket. Our friends and neighbours at Penrhos Spirits (pictured) are very happy to come and do a gin tasting here at The Barns which you could enjoy in the gardens, and we can recommend places to source your lunch, such as Drapers Lane Deli who can create bespoke picnic hampers ready for you to sit and enjoy without any prep.

With the treat of two Bank Holidays coming up in May, we thought we’d share a bit about what’s coming up in Herefordshire this month. As well as our lovely towns, walks, and historical sites to visit, we have some really brilliant events this May. We’ve got festivals of many kinds (art, history, literary, music, cider!), markets, and so much more to enjoy.

Some of our photographs are from the fantastic , who have some great resources on their website for local events. Photographers are credited on the images, thank you , Dan Chubbs, and Photopia Photography.

If you’re ever visiting us, we’re always really happy to offer up some suggestions of local places to visit, and upon enquiry you’ll get a brochure absolutely full with our favourite spots.

We hope you all enjoy your bank holiday weekend!

A stroll through the heart of Hereford

This beautiful shot of Church Street, captured by .hendersonphotography, offers a glimpse into the charm of this historic cathedral city. Around a 30-minute drive from The Barns, Hereford is well worth exploring during your stay.

At its centre stands Hereford Cathedral, a place of worship for over 1,300 years and home to the remarkable medieval Mappa Mundi and a unique chained library. It’s a highlight that draws visitors from all over.

From there, take your time wandering the city’s streets. Church Street is known for its independent shops, cafés and small businesses, making it ideal for a relaxed afternoon of browsing and stopping for coffee or lunch.

As you continue your walk, you’ll find historic squares, local markets and green spaces, as well as easy access to the River Wye for a quieter change of pace. The mix of heritage buildings, independent retailers and welcoming places to eat gives Hereford its distinctive character.

Whether you visit for a few hours or make a day of it, Hereford offers plenty to discover just a short drive from The Barns.

We thought we'd show you a little bit of the Walking Brochure we've been working on. We've got a section of 'Walks from the Door': 6 circular walks right from our doorstep at The Barns which includes a pushchair friendly walk, family friendly walks, and a pub walk. We then have a 'Walks Further Afield' section (which is what the illustration is a part of) where we recommend walks that will take you to some of our favourite local areas - some start in our favourite towns, some are bigger hikes out in the hills, and the letters represent days out that include walks, such as open gardens and National Trust properties.

Each walk has a description, a car park location, a distance location (both from The Barns, and how long it will take to walk), and a scannable QR code which will take you to an OS Map where we have plotted out the route so you are able to follow this along on your phone as you walk. You can also download the walks ahead of time.

If you'd like to have a look at our Walking Brochure, let us know and we will send you the link. It is a work in progress - at the moment we are creating a large scale illustrated map of our local area with all of the field boundaries shown so that our 'Walks from the Door' will be accompanied by a physical map for you to take out on your adventures.

We love seeing The Old Mill kitchen set up and ready for a celebration.

We are looking forward to the days when we can get those doors open and let some lovely fresh air in!

It's a new calendar year, but it's good to remember that we're still sat deeply in the winter months and everything is a bit slower and quieter, and there's a lot of loveliness to be found in that. We hope our winter guests will embrace the chance of complete cosiness - late morning lie-ins, sitting by the fire with a book, getting some games out to enjoy together, having a film night with a hot chocolate, or getting in a cheese and charcuterie board in from one of our lovely local towns.

If you need a bit of help to wind down, we have some really wonderful recommendations of local businesses to help, including creative tutors (drawing, floristry, pottery, chocolate or cocktail making) as well as yoga or dance instructors and mobile spa treatments.
