🍂 IT’S OFFICIALLY AUTUMN! 🍂

Apparently, as of today, 1st September, summer is officially over and meteorological autumn has begun. 🍁

Someone might want to let the midges know…

Because apparently they didn’t get the memo. 🙄🦟

They’re still here.
Still hungry.
Still operating at full capacity.
And seemingly completely unaware that their seasonal contract has EXPIRED. 😂

So while we welcome crisp mornings, changing leaves and cosy autumn evenings…

Captain McMidge and his tiny army have refused to clock out. 🦟🦟🦟

Honestly, you just can’t get the staff these days. 🤦‍♀️😂

🍁 Happy 1st September from Blackwater! 🍁

🌟 A little team appreciation post… because some days really show you what your team is made of. 🌟

Yesterday I had to step away from the business to attend the funeral of our friend Robert Marshall, which meant leaving the team a little short-handed on what should have been a fairly normal busy day.

It turned out to be anything but normal! 😅

Vicki’s day started at 3am with a fire alarm call-out (thankfully a false alarm!) and later she found herself looking after a camper who had become very unwell. She contacted the emergency services, arranged for medication to be collected for him and continued checking on him throughout the day to make sure he was okay.

All while keeping everything else ticking along behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, Euan and Gerle were working their socks off getting the site turned around and ready for another full check-in.

Between them, they dealt with a complete changeover of around 120 guests, cleaning, check-outs, check-ins, emails, enquiries and all the usual chaos that comes with a full site — plus everything unexpected that the day decided to throw at them!

I’m incredibly grateful to all three of them, but I have to give a special mention to Vicki, who really stepped up, took charge and kept the business running when I couldn't be there. ❤️

It’s easy to see the finished rooms, clean facilities and guests checking in at 3pm and not realise just how much work, problem-solving and care has gone on behind the scenes to make that happen.

Yesterday was one of those days that reminded me just how much I appreciate and respect the team we have.

Vicki, Euan & Gerle — thank you. You absolutely smashed it. ❤️

And Vicki… you were an absolute star. ⭐

Today, rather than another sad post, we want to do something that we think Robert would have appreciated far more — celebrate him. ❤️

Last week, we very suddenly lost our wonderful friend Robert Marshall.

Robert wasn't just a familiar face at Blackwater; he and his family have been part of our Blackwater family for many years.

And if there was one place Robert was happiest, it was out there on the West Highland Way.

And he certainly knew it well...
107 times. 🥾

One hundred and six complete walks of the West Highland Way — an incredible achievement and a record that says so much about the man himself.

But Robert was so much more than a number or a record.

He absolutely loved his family, they were a huge part of his life and he spoke about them with such pride and affection. He had a brilliant sense of humour, was incredibly humble, hating a fuss, appreciated the simplicity in things, loved keeping himself active and was always looking forward — to the next walk, the next adventure, the next thing to enjoy.

He was also an amazingly talented photographer & artist, another side of Robert that showed just how much creativity and passion he had for life.

Robert suffered a heart attack while out walking last week, doing exactly what he loved most — walking the West Highland Way. There is something strangely comforting in knowing that his final day was spent outdoors, on the trail that had given him so many happy memories over the years.

We've read so many lovely messages about Robert over the past week, and they show just how many lives he touched. But today we don't want to focus on his passing.

We want to celebrate 107 West Highland Ways. The thousands upon thousands of miles. The incredible artwork. The stories. The laughs. The friendships. The adventures. The family he loved so very much. The familiar face coming through our doors again and again. And a life that was very clearly well walked and well lived. ❤️

Robert, you were truly one of a kind, and it was an absolute privilege to call you our friend.

The West Highland Way simply won't be quite the same without you on it.

But there's one thing we know for certain...

You would have absolutely hated the thought of number 108 being left unfinished! ❤️🥾.

Robert was never one for looking backwards — so neither will we. So, when the time is right, his family and those of us lucky enough to call him our friend will return to the West Highland Way and finish those remaining miles for him.
Because after completing it 107 times, there's no way we're letting Robert leave 108 unfinished.

So here's to Robert Marshall — 107 complete West Highland Ways, an incredible talent, a wonderful sense of humour, a much-loved family man and friend, and one final journey that we'll finish together.

Rest easy, Robert. Your walking boots have certainly earned it, we'll get you to Fort William one last time. 💛
....and knowing you, you'll probably be wondering what took us so long

🌒 Something a little bit special is heading our way...

If you're staying with us on Wednesday 12th August, don't forget to look up! 👀

Around 7pm, we'll get to see a partial solar eclipse, with around 90% of the Sun covered here in the Highlands. 🌞🌑

It's not every day the Moon decides to photobomb the Sun, so if the Scottish weather behaves itself (we know... that's a big "if" 🤣), it should be a pretty amazing sight.

🕖 Peak eclipse: Around 7:03pm in our area.

⚠️ Important: Never look directly at the Sun without proper eclipse glasses or a safe solar viewer. Sunglasses aren't enough.

Who's hoping for clear skies? 🤞☀️ (We'll have a word with the weather... but no promises! 😅)

Rain, rain, go away,
We have puddles every day!
Rain on boots, rain on hats,
Rain on hikers, dogs and cats.
Rain on mountains, rain on trees,
Rain that rides upon the breeze.
Rain on backpacks, socks and shoes...
Honestly, we've had the blues!
We like Scotland, don't get us wrong,
The views are grand, the walks are long.
But could the sunshine have a go?
We'd really like our hills to show!
So off you pop, you drizzly spray,
Please take a little holiday.
Send blue skies for just one day...
Rain, rain... GO AWAY! ☀️
