Aquariums make excellent city-break detours because they offer something few attractions can: scale, movement and a completely different visual language.

Valencia’s L’Oceanogràfic, Singapore’s S.E.A. Aquarium, Lisbon’s Oceanário, Dubai Aquarium and SEA LIFE London each turn marine life into architecture you move through, not simply exhibits you look at.

For travellers who value design, photography and memorable interiors, these are far more than rainy-day attractions.

Which aquarium would you travel to see?

Dublin’s new generation of city hotels is looking beyond the bedroom. The Chancery pairs 150 rooms with Fawn Restaurant, a cocktail bar, wellness facilities and terrace suites overlooking the city, all within walking distance of Dublin Castle and Grafton Street.

Its strongest feature may be the walled garden, which brings an unexpectedly residential quality to a central Dublin address. For short city stays, that mix of location, food and usable hotel space increasingly matters.

What would make you stay here?

Dublin has become one of Europe’s most interesting cities for eating out, with restaurants matching serious cooking with personality, strong design and a distinctly local point of view.

The city’s dining scene now stretches well beyond the traditional Irish pub, with ambitious chefs, inventive menus and intimate neighbourhood addresses giving date night a genuine sense of occasion.

For couples planning a weekend in Dublin, dinner has become one of the strongest reasons to book the trip. Whcih one would you poick first?

Dublin works best when everything is within reach. The Grafton Hotel puts 128 contemporary rooms, Bartley’s Restaurant, Bartley’s Bar and a city-view breakfast terrace two minutes from Grafton Street and St Stephen’s Green. Art Deco interiors give the hotel its personality, while spacious bedrooms, walk-in showers and Chromecast-equipped TVs keep the stay practical. Add a central Creative Quarter address, strong sustainability credentials and easy access to Dublin’s key districts, and it makes a smart base for a weekend city break.

Vienna plays fashion on its own terms. Concept stores sit inside stone-vaulted rooms once used for something else entirely. Archive closets hold pieces collected over decades, far ahead of this season’s drop. Independent boutiques outnumber the flagship names here.

This is a city built for people who like tracking things down. Five addresses worth building a day around.

Miiro Spittelberg picked Vienna’s most characterful district and settled right into it, steps from Kirchberggasse.

Local artwork and bespoke sculpture run through all 132 rooms, atelier-style down to the last detail. Downstairs, Poco serves pizza by the pie and cocktails that run past midnight.

A 24/7 gym and a small library round out the ground floor. The Refresh Room is available before check-in and after check-out

Everyone chasing hidden gems abroad has missed the one fifteen minutes from Richmond station. The hotel occupies a Georgian townhouse directly on the Thames. Bingham Riverhouse turns two nights there into a complete break, priced from £650 for two. Guests stay in a River Room, then take a three-course Market Menu dinner with a bottle of house wine. A complimentary wellness class and a full Riverhouse breakfast follow the next morning.

The offer runs Sunday to Thursday, throughout August only. River Rooms make up a limited share of the hotel, and August is when they book out first.

Room2 is now Second Nature. Same studios, same flexible stays, but the rebrand finally matches what mattered all along: location. Two minutes from Belfast’s City Hall. Steps from the Thames in Chiswick. The maritime quarter in Southampton. No resort postcodes, just addresses built for travellers who want one hotel for work and play.

Sustainability is built in too, heat pumps and solar you’ll never notice, because a stocked kitchen and a real 24 hour stay matter more.

Belfast, Chiswick, or Southampton, which one’s first?
