St Mary’s Quad at St Andrews University looking lovely in the summer sunshine. The thorn tree was reputedly planted by Mary Queen of Scots in the 16th century. ☀️

St Conan’s Kirk at Lochawe. Visit if you get the chance. It’s a fascinating building in an eclectic mix of architectural styles, and in a beautiful setting over looking Loch Awe. I was surprised to find a memorial to Robert The Bruce commemorating his victory in a nearby battle.

Glasgow’s Burrell Collection has something for (almost) everyone

The Burrell Collection, housed in a purpose-built gallery in Glasgow's Pollok Country Park, is a remarkable collection of over 9,000 artworks and objects gifted to the people of Glasgow in 1944 by shipping magnate Sir William Burrell and his wife, Lady Constance. Begun in the 1870s, the collection includes objects from ancient civilisations, European art, arms and armour, tapestries, stained glass, furniture, architectural fragments and one of Europe’s most important collections of Chinese art....

The Rob Mulholland sculpture ‘Still’ (often also called the ‘Mirror Man’) in Loch Earn at St Fillans returned to the loch last year after an absence of eight years. Despite the showery and windy conditions today, it’s an impressive sight.

Days out: Falkland village and palace

The picturesque Fife village of Falkland is dominated by the Renaissance palace that shares its name. The palace and gardens are managed by the National Trust for Scotland and make a great destination for a day out from Tigh a' Mhaide. The palace was a favourite royal playground where Scotland's kings and queens hunted and relaxed. More recently, the palace and Falkland village featured in the TV series…...

Inchmahome Priory makes for a great outing from Tigh a’ Mhaide, especially when the weather is as fine as it was when I was there last week. The 10 minute boat ride to the island in the Lake of Menteith on which the priory stands is an added bonus. Take a picnic and relax in the priory grounds or the surrounding woodland. There’s plenty of wildlife on the island and, if you’re lucky, you might see an osprey fishing in the loch. It’s a lovely, peaceful spot on quieter days. I can see why the monks who lived there chose it, and also why it was an attractive refuge for aristocratic visitors like Mary, Queen of Scots. The Priory is managed by Historic Environment Scotland. You can just turn up but it’s best to book ahead to be sure of a seat on the boat.
