On the remote Isle of Muck, even the four-legged members of the team are ready for whatever the sporting day brings. From driven partridge shoots to unpredictable Highland weather, life on this small Scottish island is shaped by tradition, adventure, and a deep connection to the land.

In “The Magic of Muck,” Sarah Farnsworth takes us along for an unforgettable sporting adventure in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides.

From the October-November 2026 issue of Covey Rise...

"For more than four decades, Robert Earl Keen has built a life around songs, stories, and the people who gather to hear them. From the wings, the view reveals what the music has always been about: a connection between the man onstage and the crowd beyond the lights."

Five centuries in the making.

Today marks Beretta’s 500th anniversary—and to commemorate a milestone unlike any other, we did something we’ve never done before.

Inside the October–November issue of Covey Rise, you’ll find a special-edition foldout celebrating 500 years of Beretta history, from 1526 to today.

Here’s to 500 years.

Introducing...

VOLUME 14, NUMBER 6 | OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2026

In this issue of Covey Rise, we learn that true innovation isn’t about abandoning the past—it’s about building on it. That spirit is perhaps best embodied by Beretta. For five centuries—an almost unimaginable 500 years—the company has endured not because it clung to the past but by respecting it while continuing to evolve. Every generation has added something to the one before, blending time-honored craftsmanship with new ideas, technology, and fresh thinking. In a world obsessed with what’s next, Beretta reminds us that the greatest innovations are often built upon the strongest foundations.

We also have a fantastic feature by Reid Bryant about Robert Earl Keen, an iconic musician who certainly personifies this successful spirit of longevity. Through illustrations by Fred Stivers and a story by Claire Sadler, we honor the history and tradition of Beretta, the family that started it all, and their innovation to change the future. Our feature on Dubarry is a reminder that some brands don’t chase trends—they set standards. Our piece about Chef Tim Maddams reminds us that the story of a hunt is only half complete until it’s shared around the table. The Isle of Muck comes vividly to life through Sarah Farnsworth’s extraordinary photography, revealing a landscape where nature still sets the rhythm.

We tip our cap to those who have come before us, those who have embraced longevity, and those who are willing to innovate for our future. May these stories remind us that the things worth preserving are often the very things that continue to evolve. We hope you enjoy this issue!

Few names have left a mark on the bird-dog world quite like Delmar Smith. We’re saddened to hear of his passing but grateful for the legacy he leaves behind.

Delmar spent a lifetime shaping not only exceptional bird dogs, but generations of the people who trained them. His belief in patience, understanding, and a gentle hand changed the way countless sportsmen and women approached their dogs—and his influence will endure for generations to come.

When we featured Delmar in the February–March 2016 issue of Covey Rise, writer Tom Davis put it simply: “No one has witnessed more bird-dog history than Delmar; few have made as much.”

Our thoughts are with the Smith family and all those who knew, learned from, and loved Delmar.

Scenes from our current issue...

Before the covey rises, there is the quiet loading of the gun. Then comes the search—the grouse disappearing into the heather, the hunters disappearing into the hills.

To understand Hamish Martin, you have to follow him into the hills.

There, among Scots pine, juniper, blaeberries, deer, and dogs, the seemingly separate pieces of his life begin to make sense. Hunting, conservation, wh**ky, tartan, and tradition are all connected by the landscape beneath his feet.

What makes a “Charlie dog”?

For Charlie Thorburn of Mordor Gundogs, it’s a certain look, a certain calmness, and generations of careful breeding. From a small farm in Scotland, his Labradors and spaniels have found homes across 35 countries and 37 states—and earned a reputation all their own.
