A lovely story about our local beavers 💚

THEY WERE RELEASED MONTHS AGO.
NOW THE CAMERAS HAVE CAUGHT TWO OF THEM DOING SOMETHING CONSERVATIONISTS WERE HOPING FOR: THEY FOUND EACH OTHER.

On Exmoor, two Eurasian beavers released into the wild earlier this year have now been filmed grooming one another and spending time closely together.

That may sound like a small moment.

For this project, it really isn’t.

The animals were among several beavers released across the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate in February and March 2026, following changes that allowed licensed wild releases in England.

At first, nobody knew exactly what would happen once they disappeared into the landscape.

Would they settle?

Would they remain apart?

Would they establish territories?

Then the trail cameras recorded something different.

Two of them had apparently paired up.

The footage shows the beavers staying close and grooming each other, behaviour the National Trust says is an encouraging sign that they are settling into their new environment and developing the social bond that could eventually become the foundation of a family group.

That last part matters.

These animals were deliberately selected from different genetic groups in the hope of building a healthy, diverse population.

There are no kits to announce yet.

And it would be wrong to pretend that a family is guaranteed.

But this is exactly the sort of development conservationists hoped the cameras might eventually reveal:

not just two released animals surviving,

but two wild beavers beginning to choose each other.

Beavers vanished from Britain centuries ago after persecution and overhunting.

Now, on a quiet stretch of Exmoor,

two animals belonging to a species once lost from the English landscape have been filmed side by side again.

Not in cages.

Not during a release.

On their own.

And perhaps the most beautiful part is that nobody placed them together.

THEY FOUND EACH OTHER.
