Loch Laggan is only about fifteen minutes' drive from us, and the beach there is a fine place for a walk. I had the sand more or less to myself the day I took this, just the clouds putting on a show overhead. Worth the short trip if you're staying with us and fancy stretching your legs by the water.

Garva Bridge is about twenty minutes drive from us, where the Spey spreads out shallow and quick over the stones. The water was properly cold, but the crossing's not hard once you've picked your line. That old arch has been standing there a very long time, and I doubt it's impressed by anyone's balancing act.

The heather comes good for a few weeks in August, and this was one of the better days for it. Furgus found himself a spot in the middle and actually stayed put, which doesn't happen often. Usually he's three fields ahead by the time I've lifted the camera.

August means the heather's in full colour up on the hill, and Furgus disappears into it every time. This morning he wedged himself into a patch taller than his ears and just breathed it all in. Took a while to coax him back down.

There's a specific shade of green you only get on overcast days up here — everything just saturates. The River Truim winding through the birches near Newtonmore, doing absolutely nothing dramatic, and all the better for it.

Two hens, one nesting box, zero interest in personal space — despite there being perfectly good empty ones right next to them. This is a daily choice they make.

On a good morning they'll leave us a couple of eggs for the guest house breakfast. On a less good morning, just feathers and a look that says we're not welcome.

Stepped outside and nearly walked straight past this one trundling across the gravel at WEE WiLDS. Hedgehogs are properly unbothered creatures — couldn't have cared less that I was standing there. Nice to know they're still thriving round here. One of those small things that makes your morning.

There's a walk at Glentruim where the rhododendrons close in on both sides and you come round the bend to this old gate, the turret just visible through the green. It's one of those paths that slows you right down. The kind of thing you don't put in the itinerary but remember long after.

Glen Markie is about fifteen minutes' drive from WEE WiLDS, and then you walk for an hour up from the road to reach this spot. You pass exactly nobody. The wee bothy with the red roof sits right on the ridge — handy for pretending you stopped to admire the view rather than because your legs told you to. One of those places that feels like it shouldn't be so close to a proper road.

Did you know the geographical Centre of Scotland is on a quiet road near Newtonmore? There's a stone and a plaque marking the spot, flanked by some properly ancient trees and a dry stone wall. No visitor centre, no car park — just a marker on a back road that most folk drive straight past. It's about ten minutes from us at WEE WiLDS and worth a wee detour if you like that sort of thing.
