Yesterday (24/7/19) we finished the winter barley and changed the Lexion over to do oilseed r**e. We drove into the crop at around 6:30 and weren’t too hopeful we would be able to keep going. Our neighbour had started his and it was 5% moisture and it has to be between 6 and 9%. It had been hot all day and the temperature was starting to fall below 30oC. After cutting a sample our moisture meter said the sample was unreadable ie. below 5%. So we tried it on our neighbours meter and his said it was less than 4.4%. So no joy.
Update 5:25am next morning and it’s now 11.6%

Started the winter barley harvest on Monday (15/7/19) and in the last 3 days have harvested 57 hectares (141 acres) out of a total of 92 hectares (227 acres). Today is most definitely a wet one - no combining for a few days now.

It’s all happening whilst the sun shine’s down on the farm. 1st cut silage being chopped and carted off to the clamp.

Started sowing our maize crop today. We have ourselves a new drill this year, so with that and the above average temperatures we have been having, an early start was on the cards. Soil temperature was a satisfying 14oC so we had no excuse.

Well it’s now all to do, we have the maize all harvested, all be it with a seriously depleted yield because of are long hot summer, and now we finally have a change to start to get next years harvest in the ground with the wheat drilling kicking off today. Plenty of pre-em spraying to do as well, our neighbour is 5 days ahead of us and we are spraying for him. So it’s a busy busy day, cows still need feeding and unfortunately we can’t be in two places at once.

Finished 15 hectares of winter beans last night whilst it was less brittle and we had more in the tank and less on the ground. Going to rain now, and probably not stop, the 10 ha remaining won’t pose the same problem I’m sure.

It’s only the 25th of July and we are hoping to make a mid morning start on the wheat today. I can’t remember it this early before. Finished OSR Monday after it got too dry in the heat of the day and had to resort to the hours of 22:30 until 2. 6.5% moisture in the small hours, so dry.

has started. Winter barley like darning needles, what else could we expect after such a long dry period.
