Michael Palin has recently turned 82 and Appin has a special connection with the much-loved actor, comedian, television presenter and writer.
‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ was filmed here in 1974 and featured Castle Stalker as the ‘Castle of Aargh’. Locals were drafted in as extras, and the current owner of the castle still describes his day of filming as the ‘best day of my life’. Don’t tell his wife.
In an interview with the Guardian newspaper in 2020, Michael declared his fondness for Scotland’s west coast, traveling by train from busy Euston and marvelling at ‘wild and romantic’ Rannoch Moor before disembarking at Bridge of Orchy and making his way to Appin.
We have our own little homage to Michael and his fellow Monty Python actors in Stormhouse. A subtle nod to their collective comedic genius.
