If arty culture is your thing, you will be spoilt for choice with places to visit in the area during your stay at the cottage.

In this article, the has featured Barnard Castle in their ‘Arty Weekend In…’ Series.

You could plan a whole day of culture, art, coffee, lunch, evening drinks and dinner in Barnard Castle, finishing with a show - all just a twenty minute drive from the cottage.

By far the most unlikely cultural venue for a small County Durham market town is The Bowes Museum. A stunning building, designed to look like a French chateau, built by John and Joséphine Bowes-Lyon to house their art collection. As well as an incredible volume of paintings, ceramics and a large, unique automated silver swan, it has a great café and shop and holds events throughout the year for families and individuals..

Check out our website ‘Things To Do’ page for the link to read the whole article and for a list of other interesting places to visit in the area – link in bio 🎭🎨🖼️🏰

We are very excited to announce that we have given the kitchen at Merok Cottage a rather nice update and have awarded us a Gold Award as a result. 😀🙌🎉

We have kept the Rayburn for its cosy warmth on cooler days and the full width patio doors remain to keep the pretty view at the back.

We have updated the layout and fitted a new fridge, dishwasher, microwave and induction hob. The cottage has everything you need to create a delicious home cooked meal or simply reheat a takeaway supper from the local farm shop.

It is the perfect place to relax with the warmth of the Rayburn on a cooler day or with the full width patio doors open on a warm summers day.

The light floods in throughout the morning making it a wonderful bright and fresh spot for a slow breakfast or coffee in the morning.

For those of you who may fancy working from home in a different location for a change of scene, this room in the cottage is calm and inspiring. We have USB sockets and superfast fibre broadband – there is also a desk space in the lounge.

(BTW... the lounge has had a little makeover as well keep an eye on our posts for more).

The cottage is perfect for couples who are keen to explore the North Yorkshire and Durham Dales areas, renowned for their great walking routes, rivers and open landscapes. There are plenty of historical sites, museums, galleries and great local food producers to discover too.

There are some wonderful pubs, tea shops and restaurants to enjoy locally if you can bring yourself to leave this cosy room!
