🍂 Autumn. In all its glory. 🍁

There’s something rather wonderful about this time of year. The countryside turns a hundred shades of gold, russet and amber, the air has that lovely autumn nip, and even the simplest walk becomes a little adventure.

Rustling leaves underfoot, woodland creatures going about their business, streams tumbling over mossy stones and the occasional sheep looking as though it owns the place. 🐑

Here in Sedbergh, with the magnificent Howgill Fells on our doorstep and the Yorkshire Dales waiting to be explored, autumn is a season worth slowing down for.

And after a day in the great outdoors? Back to Herdwick Barn, boots off, kettle on and a roaring fire to warm your toes.

Some people pack away their swimming things when summer ends.

Wild swimmers are not those people. 😂

Johnny will happily take the plunge whatever the weather, although Harley and Oscar appear to have very different opinions on the matter.

Harley? Couldn’t give a hoot.

Oscar? Barking furiously and edging ever closer to the water. Whether he wanted to join Johnny or not, we’re still not entirely sure.

And with autumn now well and truly here, we have a question for the wild swimmers amongst you…

Would you still get in? 💦🍂

Autumn around Sedbergh 🍂

The leaves are turning, the paths are quieter, there’s that unmistakable nip in the air… and apparently that means it’s the perfect time for a spot of wild swimming.

Harley and Elsa remain unconvinced. 😂🐾

But that’s rather the point of escaping to this little corner of the Yorkshire Dales. Pull on your boots and head for the fells. Wander without much of a plan. Find a stream. Stop for a while. Take the dogs somewhere they can get thoroughly muddy.

And if you’re feeling particularly brave, do a Johnny and get in.

Because sometimes the best days are the ones where you simply do what you want anyway.

Then it’s back to Herdwick Barn, warm up, light the fire and settle in for a cosy autumn evening. 🔥🍷

Hello, October 🍂

Misty mornings. Copper-coloured hills. Muddy boots by the door. Long walks, shorter days and that unmistakable smell of autumn in the air.

The Howgills seem to change almost daily at this time of year. One minute bathed in golden sunshine, the next disappearing behind a curtain of mist and rain.

And perhaps that’s the best bit about October. You go out when the weather says yes, retreat somewhere warm when it says absolutely not, and enjoy both equally.

Here’s to crisp mornings, roaring fires, good books, country pubs and not feeling remotely guilty about staying in. 🍁🔥

🍂 Autumn availability at Herdwick Barn

Fancy swapping dark evenings at home for dark skies, long walks and a roaring fire?

This is such a lovely time to escape to Sedbergh. Pull on your boots and head out into the Howgills, wander into town for a pub lunch, then come home, light the fire and settle in for the evening. And when the skies are clear, step outside and look up. Herdwick Barn sits in a designated dark sky area, so the stars can be rather spectacular. ✨

Bringing the dog? Even better. There’s half an acre of securely fenced grounds, so they get an autumn break too. 🐾

Autumn in the Howgills 🍂

There’s something rather special about this time of year. Crisp mornings, hills turning every shade of gold, boots by the door and the promise of somewhere warm to come back to.

At Herdwick Barn, you can spend the day out exploring the fells, wander into Sedbergh for coffee and a browse around the bookshops, then head home, light the fire and settle in for the evening.

But what does your perfect autumn escape look like?

Turn right out of Herdwick Barn’s gate and this is where your walk begins.

A quiet country lane, hedgerows on either side and plenty for four-legged guests to investigate along the way. 🐾

It’s one of those lovely little things about staying here. You can step outside, clip on the lead and be out walking almost immediately, without having to bundle everyone into the car first.

Keep going and the countryside just keeps opening up around you.
