London Bridge is a sea arch worn through ancient Devonian rock by centuries of tide and wind and swell, just off the Torquay coast, and on a calm day you can paddle straight through it. The rock face on the other side is layered and ancient, the water beneath you green and clear, and the whole bay opens out ahead. Meet Marc Wade, founder of SUP Devon and one of the most active members of the SUPHub English Riviera community. Marc came to paddleboarding the way many people do, through a chance encounter on a camping trip with a friend's board, and has never really looked back. A qualified Paddle UK Paddlesport Leader and SUP Coastal Leader, he runs guided tours, hire sessions and events across Devon's coastline and waterways, bringing the same enthusiasm to first-timers that he found for himself years ago. His paddling CV is quietly remarkable: expeditions in the Norwegian fjords, a Loch Awe wild camping trip, and 150 kilometres of paddling along the Croatian coast sup-devon, alongside a long list of races and endurance events closer to home. There is a particular quality to the light on Torbay at golden hour, when the sun drops behind the Ore Stone and the whole bay turns molten. The Ore Stone is ancient volcanic rock, part of the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark, and a designated breeding site for shags, cormorants and herring gulls who have been nesting here long before anyone thought to paddle out and watch them.
