One book that changed my thought process:

Profit First by Mike Michalowicz

You’d think that a career in banking, banking and book keeping exams and qualifications that I would know it all

Not so, that book turned what I understood about business profit on its head

Moving away from the accounting principle of

Profit = Turnover -Expenses

To

Turnover -Profit = Expenses

Meaning you decide how much profit you are going to make and then you fit your spending to the expenses you have left

Rather than just accepting what profit you have left, after you’ve finished spending.

There’s more to it as you’d expect, but that’s the biggest take away.

Choose to make a profit at a figure you want

Make your decisions based on that

This turned around how I looked at the B&B

Prior to this, I was spend, spend spend and just accepted the profit that was left at the end of the year

Then I decided what profit I wanted, and tailored my spending to the budget I was left with

Result-an instant increase in profit

It was like magic
