10 years ago today!

At just after 8pm on January 3rd 2015, the Hoegh Osaka, a 180 metre long car transporter set sail from Southampton, loaded with buses and Range Rovers, heading for the port of Bremerhaven.

As she made a port turn near the West Bramble Buoy, she developed a list that lifted her rudder and propeller out of the water.

She eventually grounded on Bramble Bank at a 50 degree angle and volunteers from Calshot RNLI and our flank stations were paged to assist.

All of the crew on the Hoegh Osaka were rescued either by lifeboat or via assisting helicopters. One had suffered a broken arm and leg when he fell and slid almost 60 feet along a corridor as the vessel listed. A second crew member jumped into the water and was plucked to safety by the nearest lifeboat.

The last remaining crew members, including the Captain were eventually rescued at just past 2am the following morning.

The Hoegh Osaka was refloated on the 7th January and then eventually towed back into Southampton 2 weeks later for repairs.
