Whitby is famous for welcoming both Goth and Steampunk communities, with thousands of visitors arriving in the town for dedicated weekends throughout the year. Although the two subcultures share a love of alternative fashion, creativity, music, literature and striking visual styles, they are distinctly different.
What are the main differences between Goth and Steampunk?
Goth emerged from the UK’s post-punk music scene during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Music remains at its heart, alongside dark, mysterious and sometimes macabre fashion featuring black clothing, leather, lace and dramatic makeup.
Steampunk has its roots in science fiction and Victorian-inspired fantasy. It imagines an alternative world where futuristic inventions are powered by steam, combining 19th-century fashion with gears, goggles, brass, pocket watches, corsets and elaborate mechanical creations.
In simple terms:

⚙️ Steampunk: Victorian adventure, retro-futuristic technology, industrial details and imaginative inventions.
Whitby Goth Weekend celebrates Gothic music, fashion and art, while Whitby Steampunk Weekend has a lighter, family-friendly atmosphere built around costumes, creativity, science fiction and Victorian-style entertainment.
There is plenty of crossover, particularly in Victorian fashion, but each has its own history and identity.
Whichever style you prefer, both communities bring incredible costumes, creativity and a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere to Whitby.
