Established in 2005, YYT in its present format has been providing young people aged 13 to 18 years, with an interest in musical theatre and drama, the opportunity to learn what it’s like to be part of a company working together and putting on a show. The skills of singing, dancing and acting will have needed to be successfully learnt in order to present one of our productions. Each production star
ts with a few workshops in order to prepare for the auditions, from which we select for a production. YYT is a non-profit making organisation and along with our productions, the only other sources of income we have come from the occasional fundraising event and others who may want to sponsor a production. The theatre company operates by a committee of volunteers who come from all walks of life but are committed to seeing singing, dancing and acting opportunities being made available for young people and at minimum cost. Some of the committee have had a lifetime of experience in theatre. The productions are chosen to challenge the Company and we feel it’s important to present shows designed or adapted solely for youth production. Our first production in April 2005 was ‘Les Miserable School Edition,’ which launched YYT into the public eye and set the bar for future productions; the ‘Les Miserable School Edition’ was not only our debut production but also the South West Premiere of the show. We have since presented two more South West Premieres, Queen’s Musical ‘Schools Will Rock You’ in April 2007 and ‘High School Musical’ in November 2007. We presented ‘West Side Story’ in October 2008, November 2009 saw the amateur premier in the South West of 'Footloose - The Musical' and November 2010 saw YYT perform 'Our House - The Madness Musical'. In 2011, YYT were selected as part of Working Title’s Billy Youth Theatre Project to perform 'Billy Elliot - The Musical: Youth Theatre Production'. With this came the opportunity to perform at a regional showcase at The Poole Lighthouse Theatre, Poole, and ultimately at the Victoria Apollo Theatre in West London (the home of Billy Elliot) as part of a Gala evening. YYT were fortunate enough to be selected to perform at both of these events. We have gone on to perform many more shows across the region and are proud to be continuing to do so even in the current climate. For over thirty years Yeovil has had a history of providing youth theatre in various forms and shapes and has long been seen as a ‘hotbed’ for producing young talented performers. Many of our Alumina have gone on to attend Drama/ Musical Theatre/ Dance and Music colleges and have gone on to Choreograph, Musical Director and actors. Our membership is currently open so why not come and join us and be part of the 2022 show!
