Join us in 2027 to dig Roman kilns at Welburn!

We're delighted to announce our first 2027 excavation will be held at Welburn, 20 March - 4 April.

We'll be excavating pottery from Roman kilns, this will be among the first major excavations in the Crambeck area in the last century.

It's a rare chance to explore a Roman industrial landscape first-hand.

No prior experience is needed. Camping and full board are available.

We can provide the disappointed-looking 🐑 … !

There are, broadly speaking, two kinds of caravanner. Most won't admit which one they are until the second glass of w**e.

The first kind wants five vans in a farmer's field. A standpipe. A chemical disposal point that is, technically, a drain with a sign on it. A view of three hills and a sheep that looks personally disappointed in them. They will tell you, unprompted, that they "don't need all the facilities". This is true, because they have brought all the facilities with them, and have spent the last forty minutes emptying them.

The second kind wants the full club site. A hardstanding with a number on it. A shower block heated to the temperature of a mild Spanish afternoon. A shop that sells milk, firelighters and a single dusty jigsaw. A warden who remembers their name, their van, and the business with the awning in 2019.

Each regards the other with the quiet pity normally reserved for people who put the milk in first.

The field lot think the club site lot have gone soft. The club site lot think the field lot simply enjoy suffering and have rebranded it as peace and quiet.

Both are right. Both are a little smug about it. And at some point every one of us has pulled into an empty field at dusk, looked at the single tap and the long dark hedge, and thought, just briefly, about a hot shower that someone else cleans.

Then put the kettle on, and stayed another night.

🍾 🐶 Sure the many animal lovers who visit the campsite will be interested to hear about this locally-produced w**e … Ryedale Vineyards is just ‘over the way’ past Kirkham Abbey 🐶 🍾

We are delighted to introduce our new demi-sec style sparkling w**e Charlie's Leg. Labelled as a tribute to vineyard collie Charlie who came to us via the wonderful people RSPCA York Animal Home. He suffered a traumatic broken leg last year but with a lot of care and treatment is now fully recovered. With every bottle sold we will donate £1 to RSPCA York Animal Home who are a self funded charity raising their own money. You can buy them essentials on their Amazon wishlist if you don't want to buy the w**e 🤫. Charlie's Leg is available to taste on our tours, available in our cellar shop and online.

Just realised we have reached over 400 followers. Hardly big time, but our little community of friends, campers and people who’d like to visit one day is something to celebrate.
