✨The “Fotakia” Custom✨

On Good Friday night, the village is transformed into a glowing spectacle. Locals place thousands of small tin lanterns filled with oil or wax—called “fotakia” (meaning “little lights”)—on rooftops, along pathways, church walls, and balconies. Just before the Epitaphios procession begins, these lanterns are lit, illuminating the entire village in a sea of flickering light.

This cherished tradition, upheld with great devotion by the community, creates a deeply moving and spiritual atmosphere. Visitors are captivated by the stunning visual display, where faith, light, and the breathtaking setting of Santorini come together in a truly unforgettable experience.
