Can Themba (1924–1967) a dél-afrikai irodalom és újságírás egyik legmeghatározóbb, melankolikus zsenije volt. Az 1950-es években, a legendás Drum magazin munkatársaként, az úgynevezett „Drum Boys” csoport tagjaként forradalmasította a fekete sajtót, ötvözve a tényfeltáró riportokat a sziporkázó, intellektuális humorral, miközben elbeszéléseiben az emberi lélek legmélyebb és legfájdalmasabb rétegeit tárta fel. Örök érvényű világirodalmi hírnevét mesteri novellájának, a The Suit-nak (Az öltöny) köszönheti, amely a szerelem, a hűtlenség és a lélektani bosszú megrázó párkapcsolati drámája. A történetben a megcsalt férj nem fizikai erőszakkal, hanem egy szörnyű pszichológiai büntetéssel reagál a csalódásra: arra kényszeríti feleségét, hogy a szerető ottfelejtett öltönyét hús-vér vendégként tisztelje, és mindenhová magával vigye. In the 1950s, as a staff writer for the legendary Drum magazine and a member of the so-called "Drum Boys" group, he revolutionized the Black press by blending investigative reporting with sparkling, intellectual wit, while exploring the deepest and most painful layers of the human soul in his narratives. His enduring world-class literary fame is due to his masterful short story, The Suit, a shattering relationship drama of love, infidelity, and psychological revenge. In the story, the betrayed husband reacts to the heartbreak not with physical violence, but with a horrifying psychological punishment: he forces his wife to revere her lover's abandoned suit as a flesh-and-blood guest and to carry it with her wherever she goes. Built upon suffocating, silent guilt and the total withholding of love, Themba’s work is a poignant memento of humiliation, the inability to forgive, and misunderstood human suffering, which continues to touch the hearts of those who encounter it to this day.
