Bali volcano eruptions Agung 2017-2020 + coronavirus info for Bali

Bali volcano eruptions Agung 2017-2020 + coronavirus info for Bali

Yes, another eruption

In the middle of the night, 4 April 1:30am, there was an eruption on Mt Agung, of reasonable size and somewhat spectacular.

The eruption featured an ejection of incandescent material from the crater - and the sound was heard up to 15km away, according to reports.

A thick ash column was seen up to 2km above Baliโ€™s highest volcano, which is over 3,000m high. The thick grey ash cloud drifted went west, and dispersed. There are some reports of light ash fall in local villages around the volcano.

The seismo measured a maximum amplitude of 25 mm, and the event lasted more than 3 and a half minutes, according to PVMBG.

In case you were wondering. No impact on flights from the ash cloud which was dispersing, as far as we can tell.

It goes without saying that you shouldnโ€™t try to climb Agung. And that you are best to keep away from the active volcano.

But no normal activities on the island have been impacted. And life goes on.

The ongoing activity of Agung isnโ€™t reason enough to cancel a holiday to Bali but is is wise to be prepared, and that means bringing a n-95 mask just in case.

There are a couple of post below with video of the eruption.

REVIEW: one bedroom villa Kuta
โ€œA great get-away from the busy Kuta holiday spot but close enough for a short walk (less than 10 mins) or transport to the main street with restaurants and hotels. The private pool is awesome and the facility is lovely for a short (or even long) stay.โ€

Large earthquake and aftershocks in nearby Lombok at 7.45pm Sunday night 5 August with 6.8 magnitude.
++ Likely aftershocks - be prepared.++

At least 91 confirmed dead (from official 4am) - unconfirmed reports on Indonesian TV say 142 dead - many others injured - Buildings damaged, power out in some areas - Damage also reported on Bali - All tsunami warnings canceled.

Two of those who died were in Bali. There others were in Lombok.

No tourists reported to have died in quake. Please ensure you are registered with your embassy or travel abroad scheme. If you are in Lombok please let family and friends know you are ok.

Local Red Cross teams and other emergency services are working without electricity in providing first aid, supplies and emergency shelter in affected parts of Lombok.

+++ NO Tsunami warning - tsunami warning has now been lifted. It was initially put out, with 0.5m waves, but now has been reviewed and lifted. There is no tsunami warning. +++

On Sunday night, just before 8pm, there was a huge earthquake near Lombok - it was widely felt in Lombok and in Bali, with lots of shaking.

It occurred in same location as last week's quake which clocked in at 6.4 and left 16 dead. This one was shallow depth less than 10km deep, but with severely felt intensity and shaking locally.

Some on-going aftershocks into Monday. Some clocking in at 5.2-5.4 initially.

Some evacuated low-lying areas around the coast, and also reports of visitors too afraid to return to coastal properties or buildings for fear of more quakes - so some spending the night outside. Reports of no electricity in some places.

However, most parts of Bali are fine and back to normal. More assessments in the light of day.

Please note, no cause for alarm. Please only follow reliable official sources of information (some bloke just told me it was 7.7 - let's not exaggerate here) - the official report is at end of this post.

In case you are wondering:
According to geophysicist Eric Fielding:
it is unlikely that these earthquakes in northern Lombok would lead to a great earthquake with magnitude larger than 8

Tsunami warning issued but now reviewing and withdrawn. Reports of evacuation from low-lying coastal areas of eastern Bali, though tsunami warning lifted a few hours after quake.

In Bali reports of being felt and buildings shaking. Damage buildings and malls, such as a mall in Kuta.

Many people ran out into the street in tourist areas of Bali. Dine and dash.

BTW not always wise to run out despite flight response as dangers of falling things from roofs and buildings, and live wires.

Didnโ€™t impact the volcano Agung. But registered on seismographs. Is not triggering anything in Agung. Unrelated. Unconnected.

Bali airport open. Planes flying.

Keep calm.

If a quake happens, the advice is:
Cover. Drop. Brace. Those are the three words and actions for staying safe in a quake. Cover your head and vitals. Get low to the ground preferably under something. Brace against the walls and substantial objects.

In Indonesia, some buildings are built to withstand a strong quake but because of the lack of resources and relative poverty, there aren't the same checks or standards as in many Western nations.
So you might decide to exit the building asap.

Yes, there are some things we have no control over, and some things we can do. Interesting world we live in, eh?

Follow this page for updates.

Also, for those in Lombok (and Bali) staying in accommodation, that was a significant quake, and if your building withstood that without any major damage you might want to check the building for your own piece of mind:

Checking your building for damage

If you are worried about your hotel, house or guesthouse in Lombok or Bali where you are staying, and not sure if it is OK to return inside, remember a few things:
that after the initial quake there are sometimes many aftershocks for hours and days after the big one
during a quake the foundation will move to follow the motion of ground, and the building will try to follow along, with forces pushing against walls, floors and roof

the most common site of cracks from quakes is around windows and doorframes - check to see if they move freely or are jammed or if things have popped out
look at the building around the outside to see if any collapse or movement off the foundation
see if there are any tiles or bricks that have fallen from the roof or exterior
check the ground for any fissures or where the ground may have shifted
does the building look crooked?
has the floor or roof come away from the supports?
is the floor bouncy or mushy suggesting damage under the floor
check stairs for stability
are any doors and windows jammed or blocked?
are there any cracks or bulges that didnโ€™t used to be there?
is there problems with the water and sewage
check electrical systems
how much dust from paint/concrete is there around the permitter of your rooms?

Do a quick check on your room, to see if things on walls are secure, such as air-con, or evening paintings. Ideally, things should be braced or not likely to fall on you.

Make sure you have an emergency stash of water and food. And know where things are.

* Response to Earthquake Events *
* August 5, 2018 *
* In Northeast North Lombok, NTB *
In response to the earthquake in northeast North Lombok, NTB based on information obtained from BMKG, Jakarta and an analysis of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation as follows:
* 1. Earthquake Information *
The earthquake occurred on Sunday, August 5, 2018, at 18:46:35 WIB. Based on information from the BMKG the main earthquake center was at coordinates 8.37 ยฐ LS and 116.48 ยฐ East, with a magnitude of 7.0 SR at a depth of 15 Km, a distance of 27 Km northeast of North Lombok.
* 2. Geological conditions of areas affected by earthquakes *
The epicenter of the earthquake is at sea. Most of the area is composed of Tertiary to Quaternary, sediment and metamorphic Tertiary to Pre-Tertiary volcanic deposits. Most of these deposits have been raised and weathered. In the weathered deposits it is estimated that earthquake shocks will be stronger because these rocks are decomposed, loose, not compact and strengthen the vibration effect, making them vulnerable to earthquake shocks.
* 3. Causes of earthquakes *
Based on the position and depth estimated earthquake source is associated with _Flores back arc Thrust_
* 4. Impact of earthquake *
According to BMKG VI felt earthquake in Mataram, Lombok. According to information from the Great Volcano Observation Post, this earthquake felt IV MMI in the Great PGA Post. This earthquake is expected to cause a tsunami, so that Tsunami early warning was issued.
* 5. Recommendation*
* (1) * Communities are encouraged to remain calm and follow directions and information from the local government and local BPBD. Don't be provoked by irresponsible issues regarding earthquakes and tsunamis.
* (2) * Aftershocks will be smaller than major earthquakes, but people are expected to remain vigilant.
* (3) * For residents around the North Lombok coast, please avoid the area around the beach and look for a higher place.
Thus we respond to the earthquake incident in Northeast North Lombok, NTB.

From BMKG:

Tips from BMKG

After an earthquake:

If you're indoors:

Exit the building in an orderly manner.

Use stairs. Avoid elevators and escalators.

Help injured or trapped people.

Inspect the house for fires, gas leaks, short circuits.

Check the water supply and pipes.

Turn off the electricity and do not use fires.

Stay away from damaged and earthquake areas, as aftershocks are always possible.

Listen for the latest updates about the earthquake and aftershocks. Only listen to information from authorities, and avoid rumors and hoaxes.

Help authorities report on damages by filling out their questionnaire.

What is a quake?

Earthquake is a natural phenomena producing ground shaking by a sudden energy release inside the earth's crust. When the accumulated elastic strain energy is sufficiently large enough to exceed the friction resistance of tectonic plate interfaces, the slip then occurs and is followed by dissipation of seismic waves causing an earthquake.

Indonesia is considered as one of the zones the most prone to earthquakes. This is due to its position at the boundary of 3 major tectonic plates : Indian-Australian, Eurasian and Pacific. The plate boundaries are found under the sea. Hence, any large and shallow earthquake generated from this zone may potential to generate tsunami. These situations therefore classify Indonesia into one of the most prone region to tsunami.

Recommended actions
Be careful of aftershocks
