You notice it first on the washing line: white lace blouses, pressed and pinned out beside the sarongs. 🌕

The village is counting toward Purnama, the full moon, on Monday, October 26. Women pin palm into offering trays. On the day, the lane turns white and a priest's bell rings from the temple.

A gamelan recording starts, stops, rewinds and starts again. Follow it down the lane. 🌸

In the open-sided banjar, small girls in sarongs lift their arms and spread their fingers like fans. The village teacher fixes one thing at a time: a wrist, an elbow, a thumb. Then she teaches the hardest part, the eyes.

Just after dark in Ubud, a spoon taps a bowl somewhere down the lane. Ting-ting-ting.

That's the bakso man. His cart rides bolted to a motorbike: a dented pot of peppery broth, one bare bulb. A grandmother brings her own bowl. A small boy runs out barefoot with coins and gets called back for his sandals. For ten minutes, the lane is a kitchen.

Around half past four, a sound drifts over Ubud's rice fields: thup, a shout, laughter.

The village is playing volleyball. Packed earth beside the paddies, a net sagging between two bamboo poles, flip-flops kicked off at the edge. When a spike lands in the paddy, a small boy wades in for it. Linger and the ball may roll your way.

You hear them before you see them: a ripple of high voices down the lane at one o'clock.

School is out in the villages around Ubud, and the children walk home in red and white, backpacks too big for them. Stand at the gate and you'll get a careful "Hello!" and a burst of giggles. Some of them are our team's nieces and nephews.

Somewhere behind an open gate in Ubud, a soft, dry shhhk. A neighbor is splitting bamboo into ribbons.

Woven bamboo holds village life together here: temple-offering baskets, trays where rice dries, the round basket on a hip at the market. Many are still made by hand, on porches, in plain sight.

Tok. Tok-tok. That soft knocking over the garden wall isn't building work. 🌿

Follow it down the lane and you may find a village woodcarver on a woven mat, lifting curls of wood no thicker than a fingernail. In the villages around Ubud, carving still passes from grandfather to grandson, one patient afternoon at a time.

First comes a sound: bare feet scuffing bark, somewhere above the village lane. 🌴

Look up and a neighbor is halfway up a coconut palm, an ankle rope gripping the trunk, a blade at his hip, climbing as calmly as you'd take the stairs. In Ubud, ripe coconuts come down on purpose, long before they can fall on anyone.

You hear it before you see it: a dry rustle past the next wall, like someone shuffling a giant deck of cards.

It's October in Ubud, the last bright weeks of dry season, and village roofs are getting fresh alang-alang grass before the rains arrive. Bundle by bundle, overlapping like feathers.

Step onto the terrace at six and the rice fields are gone. Folded under a soft white lid. 🌫️

Only the palm tops show, like boat masts at anchor. Cool air on your arms. A rooster somewhere below, unseen. Then the sun clears the ridge and the valley comes back one terrace at a time. By nine, not a trace.
