Next week at Cap Karoso, we invite our guests to a very special evening โ€” the private premiere screening of Icha, a short documentary born from our artist residency program.

In the words of filmmaker Matt Jacob: โ€œAt the heart of the film is the story of Monika, a member of the Cap Karoso team: her childhood within the Marapu community, the weight of what was being asked of her as a potential Shaman, and the quiet negotiation between what is inherited and what is chosen.โ€

Sumba is an island where ancestral tradition is still shaping the people born into it. In five concentrated minutes, Matt Jacob distills one of the great anthropological questions: what happens to the individual when a traditional society begins its encounter with modernity.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker and our cultural ambassador.

Over two days, our artists in residence, Hayley ( ) and Pierre ( ), worked alongside students from SMP Swasta Tanjung Karoso in Kodi on a collaborative mural and creative workshop. Inspired by Sumbaโ€™s rich cultural symbols, they made the schoolโ€™s wooden wall look more vibrant and full of meaning.
