Our BHUMI philosophy is simple: travel with authenticity, live with purpose. In the heart of Yogyakarta’s most well-preserved heritage neighborhood Kotagede, we welcome you to a true adventure. An adventure should still feel like home, and we start each day around the dining table with a local vegetarian breakfast cooked daily in our kitchen. Our permaculture garden provides our supply of tea and
tisane from freshly harvested flowers picked by us — or even by our guests. A few steps away from the garden, our workshop space doubles as both a training gym (battle rope, gymnastic rings, and tires) and a place for creatives to share their art. We’ve hosted Yogyakarta’s creative circle on topics like kombucha, shibori, and even food composting — we’re lucky enough to have these creatives trust us with our space, and we hope you’ll be lucky enough to be in town when they do drop by. Stepping out of our humble home, you can explore Kotagede’s historical past (by foot or on wheels) through the one thing we can never go wrong with: food. Yogyakarta is home to some of Indonesia’s classics like kipo rice cake, jamu and satay. We’ve got you covered with a map of where to eat, because knowing our food means knowing us better. Step into the bustling Pasar Kotagede market or make your way across Malioboro Street to hear Yogayakarta come alive. We’ve never heard it described as a sleepy town, and we can’t agree more. And when you’re ready, the adventure continues outside these busy streets: hiking at Mount Merbabu, kayaking in River Opak, paragliding in Parangtritis, surfing at Gunung Kidul, and experiencing what can only be among the world’s best sunrises at Borubudur. Let us take care of the arrangements because we want you to save your energy for the adventure. We’ve been asked which of these is the best adventure, and while we can’t pick a favorite — we can add another one that is just as meaningful. We built BHUMI with the community in mind and today we are proud to support two advocacies: education and animal protection. Our home store includes local products whose proceeds benefit these two initiatives. For those that want to join us on our support for education, our guests have come along to our sessions with students at the local high school. Spend an afternoon sharing your experience with students who are eager to see the world through your eyes and practice their English. It comes as no surprise when guests say that this has become one of their most memorable experiences to date. And for those who are interested in animal protection, you need not look further as our furry family were all rescued and brought home to BHUMI in partnership with Animal Friends Yogyakarta. The end of your day back at home is met with a hot shower and a rest at our comfortable beds, along with speedy and reliable WIFI. Nights back at our place are some of best moments with our guests. Wherever you’ve been, whatever you’ve eaten, and whoever you’ve met — we want to hear your stories at the dining table or around the fire pit. Our BHUMI family is made up of all the adventures that our guests have shared with us, and we can’t wait to hear yours. We are proud of Yogyakarta and our neighbourhood Kotagede, and we’re calling on all of you — the digital nomad, the fitness buff, the travel blogger, and foodie at heart — to come and be part of our growing !
