Three stays and a games room — but no single room big enough for everyone at once. The old workshop can be that room.

In my grandfather's day this was the busiest place for miles: anchors made for the fishermen, gates for the farmers, the kettle kept going for the lot of them. It was never quiet.

The roof's on and watertight now; fitting out the inside is next. We're bringing it back to exactly what it always was — a place full of people.

Not a bit of new steel.

His frame was sound, so we kept every piece of it and painted it black — to set it off against the new insulated roof going on over the top. His structure, made sharp again. Not replaced.

The room's come good already: dry, and far lighter than it's been in years.

Restoring the old workshop, a job at a time.

Bring the dog — all of them, if you like. Every size, no charge, enclosed gardens, a wash-down hose by the door, and three blue-flag beaches within twenty minutes. 🐾

The old roof came off the workshop this month, and his steelwork was standing right there underneath — the trusses Davey John welded and raised himself, as sound as the day they went up.

He was the first welder in this part of Donegal, taught himself from a manual night after night. The way my mother puts it: when he welded a thing, it wouldn't give.

We were never going to touch the steel — only look after it.

Our new website is live.

After a lot of quiet work behind the scenes, daveyjohnsforge.ie is up — and it’s the best way yet to see the whole place.

Davey John’s Forge is three stays on one smallholding above Mulroy Bay in Carrigart: Ruby’s Cottage (sleeps six), and Rae’s and Margaret’s Cabins (two apiece). Between them, three private hot tubs, a hot-stone sauna in the old peat shed, and a games room in the original forge where Shane’s grandfather worked iron. Dogs welcome, properly, across all three.
