Two years after the flood, it’s the same story yet again…If only, had NHPC Limited initiated the protective works during the lean season of 2024 then the situation today at Phidang village would had been better. This monsoon Phidang village will be at risk again, also the only practical bridge connecting different areas of Mangan district is again in danger of being swept away too. Fidang is one of the worst affected villages aftermath the 4th of October 2023 disaster.
A natural disaster(glacial lake outburst flood) the Chungthang Dam outbreak, in Fidang village the oncoming flood collided with the Dam reservoir of the NHPC Teesta Stage V H/E Project in Fidang.

The reservoir water level was very full in Fidang during that fateful morning and the NHPC Teesta Stage V H/E Project dam gates were all closed resulting in collision with the oncoming flood which resulted in the submergence of Fidang.

Joint inspection conducted for Fidang village under Lum Gor Sangtok GPU Lower Dzongu Mangan District on the 22/11/2023 on reference to the 04/10/2023 disaster further worsened due to the presence of Teesta Stage V H/E Project Dam Reservoir lying just one km from Fidang village.

The meeting was chaired under the chairmanship of Hon’ble MLA Dzongu Ren Pintso Namgyal Lepcha , DM Mangan District , SDM Dzongu , NHPC General Manager, Senior Manager and Manager, Officials from the District, Gram Panchayat and the affected people from Fidang.

It was a fruitful meeting and the Government of Sikkim and NHPC officials have assured us with full cooperation and solving this issue at the earliest.

Fidang village lies on the tail end of NHPC Teesta Stage V H/E Project Dam reservoir.

When once after restoration of the Teesta Stage V H/E project dam NHPC decides to operate the dam then Fidang village will submerge as the river level has risen to unprecedented heights.

Fidang village falls under Lum Gor Sangtok GPU Lower Dzongu in North Sikkim District: Mangan ( one of the worst hit villages on the 4th of October 2023).

Of the many losses Fidang has suffered,seven houses were washed away, a life was lost, movable properties washed away and the asset such as The Mandarine Retreat is in great danger of submergence during this monsoon.

Only if NHPC Teesta Stage V H/E project Dam had opened the gates in time this would had been avoided.Now due to their carelessness the future remains at dark for Fidang village.
