A beautiful place for the nature lover.

The erstwhile property of the famous Rana of Koti, the Water Catchment Sanctuary is an important wildlife sanctuary having a great conservation value. The area of the Water Catchment Sanctuary was declared as a protected forest in 1952 and became a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1990. The altitude of the sanctuary varies from 1900 to 2600 m. Till 2006, the sanctuary was taken care of by the Shimla Municipal Corporation but in 2009, Shimla Wildlife Division got the charge of the place.

Covers over an area of approximately 10.25 sq. km, the catchment area is rich in biodiversity, home to an intriguing variety of flora and fauna. The variety of fauna including Leopard, Rhesus Macaque, Barking Deer, Pine Martin, Musk Deer, Himalayan Yellow Throated Porcupine, Goral, Indian Sambar, Kashmir flying Squirrel and common Langur. Also, one can spot foxes, Ghorals, house sparrows, blue Magpies, as well as pythons and other species of snakes. Besides, the sanctuary is also home to many trees including Ban Oak, Mohru Oak, Khasu Oak, Himalayan Spruce, Himalayan pine, etc.

Fagu

Situated at an elevation of 2500 meters, Fagu is a serene snow-clad hamlet, located around 45 minutes drive from Shimla. It is known for its apple plantations, sowing fields and the snow-covered Himalayas in the backdrop. Since it is secluded, Fagu is a honeymooner's heaven. It also popular amongst trekkers and naturalists.

It is believed that Fagu has derived its name from the word 'fog'. It remains covered in fog for almost 9 months a year. The whole place is enveloped by lush green pine and cedar trees and has a dreamy landscape. A number of apple trees are also located here which are adorned with rich red apples. Potato Fields are also common to spot. You can also sight animals such as snow leopards, yaks and ponies that are inhabitants of Fagu.

In the deep forest of Taani Jubbar, the Taani Jubbar Lake is situated. Explore this beautiful destination with Basa Palace Theog.
Enclosed by a thick forest of cedar trees, Taani Jubbar Lake is a small oval-shaped artificial water fed lake. The shallow water body is encircled by a paved pathway, flanked by gentle slopes, covered with pine and spruce trees. There is a small temple dedicated to 'Nag Devta', the God of Snakes, on the banks of the lake. The shrine is much revered by the locals as well as people from the surrounding areas. The colorful fair of Tani Jubbar is celebrated annually at Tani Jubbar Lake.

The lake is a perfect place where one can lay back, relax and enjoy the weather, surroundings and the charming lake. The dramatic foliage encircling the lake enables an abundance of opportunities for nature photographers and peace-seekers. One can also pitch a tent and spend a tranquil night on the banks of the lake. Visitors can also explore the village of Mailan, an old-world classical locale which is just 20 minutes downhill walk from the lake.

At 3300 meters, when you travel through the road surrounded by pine and spruce trees, on top of the hill, is situated an ancient Hatu Mata temple.

According to local belief the famous hatu mata temple is the temple of ‘Mandodari’ wife of ‘Ravna’. People come in great number on the first Sunday of ‘Jeth’ (name of hindi month) to pay ritual here. Goat sacrifice is still in practice near the temple. hat it’s where the Pandavas brothers prepared and cooked their food during their agyaat vaas.
