जोशीमठ में मौजूद नरसिंह देवता का मंदिर इतिहास बेहद ही रोचक है। इस मंदिर के बारे में कहा जाता है यह लगभग 12 हज़ार साल प्राचीन मंदिर है। इसे लेकर यह भी कहा जाता है कि इस प्राचीन मंदिर की स्थापना किसी और ने नहीं बल्कि आदि गुरु शंकराचार्य ने की थी।

ठंड के मौसम में भगवान बदरीनाथ इसी मंदिर में आकर विराजते हैं, यह भगवान बद्रीनाथ की शीतकालीन गद्दी है। यहां उनकी पूजा-अर्चना की जाती है। मान्यता है कि जोशीमठ के नृसिंह भगवान के दर्शन किए बिना भगवान बदरीनाथ की यात्रा पूरी नहीं मानी जाती। इसलिए इस मंदिर को नृसिंह बदरी भी कहा जाता है।
जिस तरह इस मंदिर का इतिहास रोचक है ठीक उसी तरह इस मंदिर की पौराणिक कथा भी बेहद रोचक है। माना जाता है कि जब भगवान ने इस मंदिर की उत्पत्ति की थी उसके बाद यहां आदिगुरु शंकराचार्य तपस्या करने लगे थे। उस समय इस स्थान को पवित्र नगरी के नाम से जाना भी जाता था।
