**Sri Vedavardhana Tirtha Swamiji** (also referred to as Vedavardhana Theertha Swamiji), the 31st pontiff of Shiroor Math (one of the Ashta Mathas), recently took charge of Shri Krishna Mutt (Sri Krishna Matha/Temple) in Udupi.
This occurred on **January 18, 2026**, during the 253rd Paryaya Mahotsava. He ascended the Sarvajna Peetha (Paryaya Peetha) in the early morning hours, marking the ceremonial handover from the outgoing Paryaya seer, Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji of Puttige Matha (whose term ran from January 2024 to January 18, 2026).
The Paryaya system, established by Sri Madhvacharya and modified in 1532 by Sri Vadiraja Tirtha Swamiji to a two-year cycle, rotates the exclusive responsibility for worshipping Lord Krishna and managing the temple among the eight Ashta Mathas (Pejawar, Puttige, Palimaru, Adamaru, Krishnapura, Shiroor, Sode, and Kaniyoor). Shiroor Math's turn began in 2026, and this is Sri Vedavardhana Tirtha Swamiji's first Paryaya—he is notably the youngest current seer in the lineage.
The event included traditional rituals like a holy dip at Danda Tirtha, a grand procession, darshan at Kanakana Kindi, and the handover of symbolic items like the Akshaya Patra. It drew massive crowds, with annadana (free meals) served to thousands, and dignitaries in attendance.
This transition was widely covered as a historic moment, emphasizing devotion, community involvement, and the continuation of Dvaita philosophy traditions.
