ds of not only the visitors but also the passers by. The mansion was built by Shri Khelat Chandra Ghosh at around 1846. He was born in 1827 at 46 Pathuria Ghata Street. A highly erudite individual, who commanded enormous approbation from all strata of the society then for all his religious, spiritual and philanthropic activities. The mansion was conceived, designed and constructed by the famous Architecture and Construction firm Martin & Burn. The construction began in 1844 during the lifetime of Shri Ghosh. It took almost two years to complete the construction. The tall Gothic pillars, beautiful marble sculptures, numerous paintings, traditional Thakur Dalan, long corridors, marble stairs, Belgian Glass Mirrors and chandeliers etc. added to the beauty of the house. The maintenance and looking after of everything till date will certainly keep the visitors awestruck. During it's heydays the Khelat Ghosh Bhavan was one of the most important live theater venues in Kolkata and always at the forefront of performing arts. As a result, many prominent personalities visited this building such as Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansadev, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Sarvapalli Radha Krishnan and many others. The present owners, the direct descendants of Shri Khelat Ghosh are committed to carry on the legacy with ongoing rituals and events like annual Durga Puja and other festivities of this family. They are also initiating some more projects with regards to culture and heritage and going to refurbish the building to match the current era so that it becomes a must see place for the heritage lovers of Bengal in the future.
