Political analyst Yogendra Yadav alleged that the Election Commission took “extraordinary steps” to delete 27 lakh names from electoral rolls in West Bengal during the Special Intensive Revision process.

In a post on X, Yadav claimed that many of those removed had already submitted forms and citizenship documents. He also alleged that communal campaigns in Assam and West Bengal went unchecked and said “American style gerrymandering” had entered Indian elections.

Yadav questioned whether Indian elections had “fallen below the minimum threshold of electoral integrity”.

Former Foreign Secretary of India Nirupama Rao has called for the creation of a “genuine public television” system in India, arguing that the country needs a broadcaster focused on public interest rather than government propaganda or ratings driven outrage.

In a detailed post, Rao said public television should provide a “trusted civic space” that is calm, credible and intellectually serious, instead of amplifying hysteria and spectacle. She criticised the growing commercialisation and aggression of television news, saying democracy cannot survive on “noise alone”.

Rao also stressed the need for journalism that prioritises verification over speed, moderation over emotional manipulation, and meaningful discussions over televised confrontations.

Uttar Pradesh Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay sparked controversy after reportedly objecting to the nursery rhyme “Rain Rain Go Away”, claiming it insults Indian traditions and culture.

Speaking to the media in Lucknow, Upadhyay said rain is considered a blessing in India and criticised the poem for asking rain to “go away”. The remarks came days after he targeted “J***y J***y Yes Papa” for allegedly encouraging children to lie.

The statement triggered sharp reactions on social media, with critics mocking the minister over what they called misplaced priorities in education.

Former IAS officer Ashish Joshi criticised BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, alleging that communal politics would harm governance and social harmony in West Bengal.

Reacting to claims that Adhikari could become the BJP’s first chief minister in the state, Joshi said Bengal would be “doomed” under a leader who “openly discriminates” against minorities. He also argued that divisive politics fuels polarisation, weakens social trust and discourages investment.

Joshi added that history shows communal politics damages governance, development and long-term harmony, saying that “Bengal deserved better”.
