🎯🐦White-throated Laughingthrush
Scientific name: _Pterorhinus albogularis_
It's one of those Himalayan birds that sounds like a whole group got together to gossip.
🐦What it looks like
Medium-sized, about 27-31 cm. Warm brown overall with a clean white throat and white around the eye that looks like spectacles. The crown and back are olive-brown, wings and tail have rufous edges. The white throat is the giveaway that separates it from other laughingthrushes.
🐦Where you find it
Himalayan foothills and mid-hills. From northern Pakistan across India, Nepal, Bhutan, to Myanmar and southwest China. It likes dense scrub, oak and rhododendron forest, and thick undergrowth between 1200-3000m.
So in Jansath, UP you're in the plains, you wouldn't see them there naturally. Closest you'd get is in the Himalayan belt: Uttarakhand, Himachal, or up into Nepal.
🐦Behavior and sound
Very social. They move in noisy flocks of 6-20 birds, hopping through bushes. The name "laughingthrush" comes from their calls: a mix of chattering, laughing notes, and whistles. When one finds food it calls and the whole group comes running.
🐦Diet
Omnivore. Berries, insects, seeds, and they flip leaf litter to find beetles and worms.
🐦Fun fact
They are notorious bathers. After rain you'll see whole flocks splashing in puddles together, then sitting out to preen while still chattering.
