The Deccan!
The Deccan is the oldest geological formation of the Indian subcontinent, with many endemic species, some found nowhere else on the planet. The Deccan Plateau in Southern India is located between the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats making this a unique landscape. Deccan is one of India’s hidden secrets, a lost paradise. A gem of India that few tourists tend to reach, yet is hugely rewarding if you can fit it into your India travel plan. North Karnataka's history and culture date back to prehistoric times. The landscape is blessed with ancient cities, like the monuments of Hampi, home to the Vijayanagar Kingdom. Badami, the workshop of temple architecture. Bijapur with its history of Deccan Sultabates. Prehistoric sites in North Karnataka include stone age relics in Koppal district with rock paintings, including figures of wild animals. The paintings are done in such a way that the walls of caves are not facing northwest, so the northwest monsoon does not affect them. These rock shelters are found at Hire Benakal, near Gangavati in the Koppal district. Burial chambers using granite slabs (known as Dolmens) are found here.Â
The rich deccan in our region is a diverse landscape. It comprises some rich grasslands, rocky outcrops, vast open plains, plateaus, farmlands and the Tungabhadra ravine ecosystems traversing through them all. This region is home to grasslands known as Yeri, with its endless plains of black cotton soil. Apart from the black soil, Koppal has another unique landscape of red soil, called Masari by the locals. Masari is dotted with rocky outcrops, like pimples and these are used as hideouts and dens by most of the carnivores. The river Tungabhadra that flows in the South, alongside the remains of the Vijayanagara empire, is home to otters and crocodiles.
In this densely populated landscape, wildlife share a complicated existence with people. It has a diverse array of carnivores such as leopards, wolves, striped hyenas, sloth bears, small cats, and mongooses that prey on various animals from large herbivores like blackbucks, chinkaras, and wild pigs to smaller creatures like rodents, birds, lizards, and termites.
