It is Wednesday and we are back with another beautiful bird spotted and admired at Kachnar Dehradun - Sunbirds.

Sunbirds are tiny, slender birds—usually around 11 cm long—with sharp, downward-curved bills perfectly adapted for feeding on nectar. Though small in size, they are among the most dazzling birds at Kachnar Dehradun, especially the males whose plumage often glows with iridescent colours.
Along with nectar, sunbirds also feed on insects and spiders, particularly when raising their young.

Kachnar, Dehradun, is home to two striking species — the Crimson Sunbird and the Purple Sunbird.

The male Crimson Sunbird is instantly recognisable by its brilliant crimson-red head and breast, glowing vividly in sunlight. The male Purple Sunbird, especially during the breeding season, displays metallic bluish-black feathers that shimmer purple, blue, or even green depending on the light.
In contrast, female sunbirds wear softer, camouflaged tones — olive-brown above and pale yellow below. This understated colouring helps protect them from predators while they build nests and incubate eggs.

Highly energetic and constantly on the move, sunbirds are often seen darting among flowers with their slender curved beaks deep inside the flowers for nectar. They may hover briefly like tiny jewels in the air or perch delicately on nearby branches while foraging.

Sunbirds make a beautiful sight though difficult to capture because of their friskiness!!!

Meet the adorable Indian White-eye 💛🐦

With their olive-yellow plumage and striking white eye-ring, these tiny birds are impossible to miss once you learn to spot them. Usually seen flitting about in small groups, Indian White-eyes are mainly insectivorous but also love sipping nectar hunting insects, and hopping through the flower laden plants and trees 🌸✨

During the breeding season, they weave delicate hammock-like nests, and both parents share the responsibility of caring for the chicks, which fledge in just about 10 days.

Fun Fact: A White-eye pair that had built their nest in a creeper beside the patio wall. The mother sat patiently hatching her eggs, looking straight into my eyes without moving an inch — even as I stepped quite close to photograph her. She was determined to protect her unborn babies facing all dangers and intrusion !!

You’ll find plenty of Indian White-eyes in and around Kachnar — clinging to flowers while drinking nectar or quietly perched on branches, surveying the world around them. 🌸✨

Hoopoes are widespread across Europe, Asia, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Madagascar. The Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops) is commonly found throughout India.
Known for their beautiful pinkish-brown bodies, striking black-and-white zebra-striped wings, and dramatic feathered crest, Hoopoes are truly fascinating birds. Their crest can be raised or lowered at will — and as you can see in the video, they can sound quite harsh too, especially when angry!

Their diet mainly consists of insects, though they also eat small reptiles, frogs, seeds, and berries.

Hoopoes usually build their nests in holes in trees, walls, or abandoned burrows. However, we have a pair of Hoopoes that absolutely love nesting in the roof of our patio!

Fun fact: No matter how hard we try to block the openings, these clever birds use their sharp beaks to scrape and create new holes in the wooden roof to build their nest.

At first, they would wait for us to leave before flying in to feed their babies. Not anymore! Now, we can be sitting and enjoying a meal while they confidently swoop over our heads carrying food for their ever-hungry chicks.
Parents really will risk everything for their children.

It’s such a beautiful sight — one that many of our guests have also enjoyed watching. ❤️

Dear Friends,
Starting today, we’re excited to introduce a new weekly series—“BIRDS of KACHNAR”—where every Wednesday we’ll spotlight one of the beautiful birds found here at Kachnar Dehradun. We hope you’ll enjoy discovering these winged beauties with us!

To begin, today’s feature is the charming RED-BILLED LEIOTHRIX —a colourful and melodious little gem.

Stay tuned for more! 🐦 ✨✨

The enchanting Red-billed leiothrix (Leiothrix lutea)—a hidden gem of the Himalayas and Southern China is mesmerising. With its vivid red bill, soft yellow eye-ring, olive-green back, and a burst of yellow-orange across its throat, this tiny bird is a beauty. Males are brighter, females a bit subtler, and juveniles sport black bills—each stage beautiful in its own way.

Red-billed Leiothrix thrives in thick forests, bamboo thickets, and shrublands, especially in moist environments.

These birds are rarely alone—they travel in flocks and communicate with soft whistles and chirps. Their calls are considered very musical, which why, amongst aviculturists it goes by various names: Pekin robin, Pekin nightingale, Japanese nightingale, and Japanese (hill) robin, the last two being misnomers as it is not native to Japan (although it has been introduced and naturalised there).

Though Red-billed leiothrix is naturally shy and hard to spot, we’re lucky to have a large flock of them at Kachnar Dehradun. It is a delight to see them prance around and sing oh so beautifully , especially early in the morning - an experience that stays with you.

An experience you truly shouldn’t miss!!!
