A Story from the Canopy
When a fruit falls from a forest tree, the hornbill turns it into a journey.
By swallowing fruits whole - mainly figs - and flying long distances, the bird disperses seeds far from the parent tree. In doing so, it acts as a critical forest architect, helping large native trees regenerate and thrive.
But nesting changes everything.
To protect her family, the female seals herself inside a tree cavity using a mix of mud, fruit pulp, and droppings, leaving only a narrow slit. She remains tucked away for 3–4 months, laying her eggs and raising the chicks in safety. During this time, the male becomes the sole provider, returning repeatedly to feed her and the chicks through that tiny opening.
