White Flying Squirrel Hokkaido
北海道で出会った白いエゾモモンガ
2026年あけましておめでとうございます。今朝はマイナス10度の晴れた朝でした。日の出前のエゾモモンガに会いに行くと、でっかい満月が西の空の地平線にあり、月とモモンガの写真が撮れないかなぁと巣穴に向かいました。暗い中で２、３匹のモモンガが、木々の中でチョロチョロと動いているのが見えました。いつもの枝に乗ってハンノキの蕾を口にくわえて静かに食べている様子が見えました。月はどこへ？と思ったら雲の中に隠れてしまい。思惑はそんなものです。日の出も１５分くらい前までに、6匹かな？巣穴に戻って行きました。今年も朝晩のエゾモモンガを見に行く毎日です。
昨年は、4月にオーストラリアに釣りに行って、ブリスベンに住む仲間とボートを引っ張って釣りに行きました。ダム湖でサラトガというアロワナを釣ったり、海でトレバリーやカツオを釣りました。9月は四国の高知県で尺鮎とアカメを狙いました。鮎は２８cmまででしたが、本場のアユ釣りの迫力醍醐味に魅了されました。釣った鮎を餌にして、８０cmを超すアカメを釣りました。
小学3年の息子(洲志）が、「海で船で釣りをしたい」というので、九州宮崎県の友人にお願いして、息子と2人で3日間の九州の旅をしてきました。私にとっても初めての九州で、全てが新鮮。息子も早起きも船の揺れにもめげずに、1日目はイサキやメジナを大きなクーラーボックスいっぱいに釣りました。2日目は、アジを釣って、それを餌に大きなブリを釣りました。息子も初めての海の力強い魚との勝負。見事な一本でした。それが年越しのお刺身とお寿司となって、親戚みんなで喜びを共有でしたことは、息子にとっては貴重な経験になったことでしょう。
今年は、1月22日からオーストラリアに1人で釣りに行きます。北海道が進めている観光促進で、北海道アドベンチャートラベルの研修という形で、北海道からの予算で釣りに行けてしまうという、「真面目な仕事」という形の釣り旅になりそうです。オーストラリアの西部のエクスマウス。どんな自然、どんな釣り、どんな人に出会うのか、久しぶりの1人旅です。
9月には、また四国の鮎とアカメのリベンジ。そして、息子は今度は夜釣りがしたいという。
月日が経つのが早いもので、今日1日、毎日を丁寧に生きないと、あっという間に年をとってしまいます。という思いで、できることをやるだけです。
そして、これは営業？です。
昨年、というか昨日1月2日。本を出版しました。
白いエゾモモンガの観察を記録した写真集です。ガイド仲間やイラストレーターの友人たちと力を合わせて出版することができました。
2024年11月に、家の近くで偶然見つけた白いモモンガ。普通にエゾモモンガと違って体の毛が真っ白で、20年以上エゾモモンガを見てきましたが、白いエゾモモンガに出会ったのは初めてでした。それが、私の家から10分ほどの場所に偶然見つけたので、それが昨年の冬のテーマ、毎朝毎晩、通いました。幸運なお客さんは白いエゾモモンガを見ることができました。
毎日巣穴に通って、2024年の11月から2025年の3月まで白いエゾモモンガを観察することができました。そして、2025年10月に巣穴を見に行くと、、、。この白いエゾモモンガがその後、どうなったのか、結末は、本の中で、、、

北海道で出会った白いエゾモモンガ
Happy New Year 2026.
This morning was a clear and sunny one, with temperatures dropping to minus 10 degrees Celsius.
Before sunrise, I went out to meet the Ezo flying squirrels. A huge full moon hung low on the western horizon, and I wondered if I might be able to photograph the moon together with the flying squirrels. With that thought in mind, I headed toward their burrow.
In the darkness, I could see two or three flying squirrels moving busily among the trees. As usual, one of them sat quietly on its familiar branch, gently holding alder buds in its mouth and eating. When I looked for the moon again, it had already disappeared behind the clouds. Things rarely go exactly as planned.
By about 15 minutes before sunrise, perhaps six flying squirrels returned to their burrow.
This year as well, my days will continue to be filled with early mornings and evenings spent observing Ezo flying squirrels.

Last year, in April, I traveled to Australia for fishing. Together with friends who live in Brisbane, we towed a boat and went fishing. In a dam lake, we caught saratoga (a type of arowana), and in the ocean, we caught trevally and bonito.
In September, I went to Kochi Prefecture in Shikoku, aiming to catch large ayu (sweetfish) and akame. The largest ayu I caught was 28 cm, but I was completely captivated by the power and depth of authentic ayu fishing. Using the ayu I caught as bait, I managed to land an akame over 80 cm long.

My son, who is in the third grade of elementary school (Shushi), said, “I want to go fishing on a boat in the sea.”
So I asked a friend in Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, and the two of us took a three-day trip together. It was my first time visiting Kyushu, and everything felt new and exciting.
Despite waking up early and enduring the motion of the boat, my son never complained. On the first day, he caught isaki and mejina, filling a large cooler box. On the second day, he caught horse mackerel, used it as bait, and then hooked a big yellowtail. It was his first real battle with a powerful ocean fish, and he landed it beautifully.
That fish became sashimi and sushi for our New Year’s celebration, shared with relatives. It was surely a precious experience for my son.

This year, starting January 22, I will travel alone to Australia for fishing. As part of Hokkaido’s tourism promotion efforts, this trip will take the form of “Hokkaido Adventure Travel” training, funded by the prefecture. In other words, a fishing trip officially labeled as “serious work.”
My destination is Exmouth in Western Australia. What kind of nature will I encounter? What kind of fishing? What kind of people? It will be my first solo trip in quite some time.
In September, I plan to return to Shikoku for another challenge at ayu and akame. Meanwhile, my son says he wants to try night fishing next.

Time passes quickly. If I don’t live each day carefully and with intention, I feel like I will grow old in the blink of an eye.
With that thought in mind, I simply do what I can, one step at a time.
And now—this may sound like a bit of promotion.
Yesterday, January 2, I published a book.
It is a photographic record documenting my observations of a white Ezo flying squirrel. With the help of fellow guides and illustrator friends, we were able to bring this book into the world.
In November 2024, I happened to discover a white flying squirrel near my home. Unlike ordinary Ezo flying squirrels, its fur was completely white. I have been observing Ezo flying squirrels for over 20 years, but this was the first time I had ever encountered a white one.
What made it even more extraordinary was that it lived just about 10 minutes from my house. That discovery became the theme of my winter. Morning and evening, day after day, I visited the site. Some very lucky guests were also able to see this white flying squirrel.
From November 2024 to March 2025, I continued observing it by visiting its burrow every day. Then, in October 2025, when I went to check the burrow again…
