When you picture a traditional Japanese room, tatami mats(畳) are probably the first thing that comes to mind. Here’s a quick introduction to these iconic floor coverings. Rinn Premium Machiya also offers tatami-floored rooms—experience their unique charm when you stay with us.

Freshly laid tatami, woven from soft igusa rush, exude a delicate pale-green hue and a soothing grassy aroma. As months pass, the mats mellow into warm golden tones—an exquisite display of nature’s patina and Japan’s love of wabi-sabi(侘び寂び).

Slip off your shoes at the genkan entrance and walk barefoot across the mats, feeling their silky surface and gentle spring beneath your feet.

In the midst of a hectic journey, tatami provides the perfect reset for mind and body. Surrender to the unhurried flow of time and discover authentic Japanese relaxation at Rinn Premium.

Step inside a machiya town-house and dive into Japan’s everyday bathing ritual—bubbly, soothing, and so authentic you might never want bath time to end.

Our “Living Japanese Culture” series now turns to Theme #2: The Bath, where we introduce how Japanese people enjoy their daily soak.

Explore Japanese Culture at Rinn Premium Machiya ①
— The Art of the Genkan (Entrance) —

At Rinn Premium, our renovated machiya townhouses keep the charm of traditional Japanese homes, while adding the comfort and convenience of a modern stay.

Why not experience Japanese culture not just by sightseeing, but by living in it?

Our first theme is the genkan – the Japanese-style entrance.
• Shoes-off culture
The genkan marks the boundary between the outside world and the clean, indoor space.
You take off your shoes here and step inside in slippers or bare feet.

• A mindful transition space
The genkan is more than just a doorway.
It’s a small space where you pause, exhale, and switch from “outside mode” to “relax mode”.

• Step up = welcome home
The raised floor beyond the genkan is considered the “pure” indoor area.
Stepping up is like being invited into the heart of the home.

• Shoes lined up with care
Placing your shoes neatly at the entrance is a simple, beautiful Japanese habit that shows respect for the home.

Start your stay by enjoying that “I’m home” feeling the moment you step into the machiya.
We’ll be sharing more ways to discover Japanese culture through our townhouses, so follow us and hit like if you’d like to see the next posts.

Rinn Premium extends its warmest wishes for 2026.

To mark our first post of the year, we look back on “Rinn Premium’s Journey Through 2025,” tracing the seasons and the milestones of each property.

【Winter (Jan–Feb)】
On January 10, snow fell over Kyoto, lightly cloaking Kinkaku-ji in white.

【Spring (Mar–Apr)】
Kyoto’s cherry blossoms bloomed on March 27 and reached full bloom on April 5, right on schedule.
March marked the 6th anniversary of Rinn Premium Yae.
On April 13, the Osaka-Kansai Expo opened its doors.

【Early Summer (May–Jun)】
In May, the Expo set a Guinness World Record for the “largest marching band.”

【Summer (Jul–Aug)】
In July, a “July 5 Doomsday Prediction” stirred conversation across Asia.
August celebrated the 5th anniversary of Rinn Premium Hiun I–III and the 7th anniversary of Rinn Premium Kunpu.
We also renewed the noren curtains at Kunpu and Nijo-jo Kita.

【Early Autumn (Sep–Oct)】
September brought lingering heat, with some days topping 37°C.
In October, Rinn Premium Nijo-jo Kita celebrated its 7th anniversary, and the Osaka Expo came to a close.

【Autumn–Winter (Nov–Dec)】
The autumn leaves reached their peak from mid-November to early December, as in most years.
In December, Rinn Premium Koki West and Koki East celebrated their 6th anniversary.
As the seasons turned, each Rinn Premium property marked memorable milestones throughout the year.
In 2026 as well, we hope that every moment you spend at Rinn Premium will become a cherished part of your journey.

✨Experience a Special New Year in Kyoto: Mystical Nights and Wishes for Good Fortune✨

Discover a magical New Year in ancient Kyoto, brimming with tradition and wonder.

In Japan, there are many unique year-end and New Year traditions. For example:

✨Okera Mairi: Kyoto’s Iconic New Year’s Eve Spectacle at Yasaka Shrine✨

On New Year’s Eve, Yasaka Shrine hosts the mystical “Okera Mairi.” From 7:30 PM until dawn, participants carry sacred flames (Okera-bi) on spinning ropes, praying for health in the year ahead. These dancing fires—each bearing a wish—create a stunning display of history and faith.

🐴For the Year of the Horse 2026: Fujinomori Shrine, Deity of Victory and Horses🐴

For the 2026 Year of the Horse, we recommend Fujinomori Shrine in southern Kyoto. This ancient shrine is revered as a deity of victory and horses. Its grounds make it an excellent power spot for those seeking luck or with horse connections. Easily accessible (5-min walk from JR Fujinomori Sta.), it's ideal for your New Year's visit (Hatsumode).

Other traditions include the New Year’s Eve bell-ringing ceremony (Joya no Kane), year-crossing buckwheat noodles (Toshikoshi Soba), and the first shrine visit (Hatsumode). Why not experience these time-honored customs yourself?
