今週末ノルウェーから20代のカップルをお迎えしました。
きっかけは、"Life Where I'm from"というYouTubeチャンネルにアップされているJapan's Sustainable Forest Villageという動画。
林業やサステナブルな暮らしのストーリーが、ここ西粟倉へと彼らを導いてくれました。
今回、私が一番強く感じたのは、
「私たちが見えていない価値を、彼らは見ている」ということです。
彼らは3日連続で、村内の温泉のすぐ横にある「みそ汁や 一汁一菜」という小さな食堂へ。
大きなお椀の味噌汁。
日頃からお世話になっていて日常の一部になりつつある空間。
でも彼らは言いました。
「ノルウェーでは外で食べるとすごく高くて、、。こんな内容の食事なら、きっとノルウェーなら5000円くらいすると思う。」
「え？？？」
OMG、ざっくり５倍くらいの値段！
そしてもう一つ。大原駅に送りに行く前Baseでランチをしながら、私がある質問をしました。
"What is your end goal?"
I asked them to imagine their dream life,
to speak as freely and boldly as possible
毎朝起きるのが楽しみで仕方がない、と思えるような
理想のライフスタイルを精一杯想像力を働かせて、自分に遠慮せず、現実ガン無視でイメージして欲しい。
どこに誰といて、何をしてる？
彼女は少し考えだしましたが、彼はすぐ笑って答えました。
「彼女と一緒に日本を旅している。こんな感じに」
ということは、今、もうすでにその夢を生きている。
ノルウェーからはるばるやってきた彼のこの言葉を西粟倉で聞けたこと。まさに私にとって真の豊かさを感じる一瞬でした。
自分は本当に豊かだと。
こうやって海外からのお客様をお迎えし、彼らの言葉を直接聞けること。
そしてみんながこの村をどれだけ好きか、何度も何度も伝えてくれること。
その声やエネルギー、感情に触れられること。
普段「当たり前」と思っているものを、
まったく違う視点で見せてもらえること。
それが、私にとっての“本当の豊かさ”です。
西粟倉のみなさんへ。
私たちにとっては見慣れてしまった日常。
だけど私たちのこの生活は誰かにとっての憧れです。
この感覚を、できるだけ多くの人に感じてほしい。
だから若いみんなには英語に触れてほしい。
この場所を、もう一度違う視点で観れるから。
私たちはすでに、豊かさの中にいるのだと、心の底から思えるから。
Andres said,
“I would be traveling Japan with Regine like this.”
And I realized—
This trip to Nishiawakura… is already their dream come true.
The life we are living here, every day,
the quiet, the forests, the food, the people—
is something someone, somewhere, is dreaming of.
And in that moment, I felt something very clearly.
I felt truly wealthy.
To be able to sit with them,
to listen directly to their voices, their excitement, their emotion—
as they spoke, again and again, about how much they love this village.
To have access to that perspective,
that fresh way of seeing what we call “ordinary”…
That, to me, is true wealth.
To my friends in Nishiawakura,
What we cannot see anymore, because we are so used to it…
Others travel across the world to experience.
This is something I deeply wish to share with as many people here as possible—
To feel what I felt.
To see this place through new eyes.
To recognize the richness that already exists here.
We are already living in a place of true wealth.
They even extended their stay, simply because they wanted to be here longer.
That, to me, says everything.
