About Otaru.
Otaru is a historic port city on the Sea of Japan in the country's northern island, Hokkaido.
Whilst not exactly a secret, it has to some extent gone unnoticed as a skiing destination due to the exploding popularity of Niseko, with its fancy hotels and somewhat crowded slopes, located a 90 minute drive down the road. 40 minutes in the other direction and you will be in downtown Sapporo, a city of 2 million people. You could say Otaru is perfectly and conveniently situated between the two. It is connected to Sapporo and New Chitose Airport by highway and a train line. The real draw card however is the skiing and snowboarding. There are 2 small ‘local’ style resorts within the city limits; Tenguyama & Asarigawa. They both offer rewarding riding with stellar views over the city and ocean. A mere 40 minute drive from the city centre can have you at a further 3 resorts; Kiroro, Kokusai & Teine. All offer excellent piste riding, with plenty of trees, bowls and chutes to keep the more adventurous satisfied. Kiroro regularly receives the most snow of any resort in Japan, Kokusai is a local favourite with awesome sidecountry and an even better curry ramen. Teine has something for everyone, perfect for beginners, but also boasting 3 steep chutes a short walk from the top of the chair. On a powder day there is nowhere better to be.
Otaru can feel like a busy bustling city, and also a quaint seaside town at the same time, and it is always hard to beat for great access to powder zones, great dining and drinking spots.
