👺 The Legend of the Kappa — Spirit of Jozankei 🌿

Have you heard of the Kappa?
This mythical creature, said to inhabit rivers across Japan, is often depicted with green skin, webbed hands, and a mischievous yet mysterious nature.

In Jozankei, there is a local legend that brings this folklore to life.

Long ago, a young boy working near the river was said to have been charmed by a Kappa and drawn toward the flowing water. Swept away by the current, he was never found. The villagers believed he had been taken by the river spirit.

Years later, the boy appeared in his father’s dream, saying:
“I am living happily with a Kappa wife and child.”

Since that time, the Kappa has become a beloved symbol and mascot of Jozankei, representing the deep connection between the town and its rivers.

During your stay, you can spot this iconic character at the hand bath near the entrance of Chalet Ivy Jozankei — a small but meaningful reminder of the stories that flow through this valley. 🌊♨️
