What makes a place worth coming back to again and again? 🏔️♨️
Tucked into the mountains of Nagano, Nozawa Onsen is far more than just a ski destination — it’s a village shaped by over 1,000 years of history, where nature, culture, and community are deeply intertwined.
Originally known for its natural hot springs, Nozawa has long been a place of healing and retreat. Today, the village is home to 13 free public onsen, all fed by its own geothermal source and still maintained by the local community — one of the few places in Japan where this tradition continues so authentically.
In winter, Nozawa Onsen becomes one of Japan’s most loved ski resorts, known for its abundant snowfall, varied terrain, and the rare charm of skiing straight into a traditional village. The village is also home to the famous Dosojin Fire Festival, held every January — one of Japan’s most important traditional fire festivals.
Beyond winter, Nozawa is a true year-round destination. In the green season, the mountains open up to hiking and biking trails, forests and rice fields come alive, and the pace shifts into something slower and deeply restorative.
We’ve been based here for the past 15 years as hosts and owners of Kumanote Lodge, Yukiguma Lodge, and Fujisawaso Lodge, and we love sharing this place and its unique energy with guests from all over the world.
When you stay with us, it’s not just about having a place to sleep — it’s about experiencing Nozawa through a local lens, with our tips, recommendations, and favorite spots.
People don’t just come to Nozawa once — it’s the kind of place you find yourself coming back to, season after season. 🤍
