BUSIA COUNTY WELCOMES URBAN EXPANSION PROGRAM TEAM FOR KEY DISCUSSIONS
Busia County welcomed a senior delegation from the Urban Expansion Program (UXP) on Tuesday for a pivotal meeting at the County Lounge, a milestone engagement in promoting sustainable urban growth across the region.
Led by former Nairobi Mayor Hon. Joe Aketch, the UXP team is conducting a nationwide tour of engagements, following a recent stop in Lamu County.
In Busia, the focus was on building stronger ties with county leaders and essential departments like lands, housing, and urban planning.
Talks revolved around an upcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Busia County Government and UXP, slated for signing this financial year.
The session included high-ranking county figures such as the CECM for Lands, Chief Officers for Urban Planning and Lands, all Lands department directors, municipal managers, county planners, and procurement representatives.
Once signed, UXP will assist with staff training, peer exchanges, and benchmarking, plus joint funding for early urban projects. Work on these initiatives will start right after the MoU is in place.
UXP also shared plans to back targeted urban areas—especially municipalities via an Urban Expansion Team Fund for vital infrastructure projects.
County Secretary Oscar Juma, speaking on behalf of Busia Governor, H.E. Dr. Paul Otuoma affirmed the county's enthusiasm for the program.
He called it perfectly timed amid Busia's push for rapid urbanization, citing projects like affordable housing, the Export Processing Zone (EPZ), a planned airport, and Nasewa's upgrade.
He noted its fit with Kenya Urban Support Programme Phase II (KUSP II) talks on municipalities.
This partnership ushers in a fresh era for Busia's urban strategy, promising better-planned growth, upgraded infrastructure, and enhanced services in municipalities.
