Tom Mboya was born here. A young trade unionist who grew into one of Kenya's loudest voices for independence, he was taken far too soon, and then he came home. Today he rests on the same island where his story began, under a white cone that rises from the green like a quiet salute.

Nature got here first. Rusinga Island Lodge just had the good sense not to argue with it.

So the thatched roofs curve where the trees lean. The paths bend instead of cutting straight through. Even the benches wrap around a trunk that refused to move, because why would it, it was here before any of us had an opinion about where things should go.

This is what happens when you build with a place instead of on top of it.

From above, Rusinga Island Lodge does a very good job of hiding itself. Thick canopy, winding stone paths, a pool that only reveals itself once the trees decide to let you see it. It almost feels like the forest is protecting something it is not quite ready to share.

Good thing we are sharing it anyway.

Somewhere between the jetty and the horizon, a jet ski and a boat are just sitting there, bobbing, patient, fully aware they are about to ruin somebody's plans of doing absolutely nothing today.

Lake Victoria has a way of talking you out of relaxing and into adventure. We are not sorry about it.

Somebody set a table on the jetty and then just... left it there. No occasion. No explanation. Just a white cloth, two chairs, and a view that does not need a reason to be enjoyed.

We are not saying you should pull up a chair. We are just saying nobody would stop you.
