When I am among the trees

When I am among the trees,
especially the willows and the honey locust,
equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,
they give off such hints of gladness.
I would almost say that they save me, and daily.
I’m so distant from the hope of myself,i
n which I have goodness, and discernment,
and never hurry through the world
but walk slowly, and bow often.
Around me the trees stir in their leaves,
and call out “stay awhile”
The light flows from their branches.
And they call again, “It’s simple” they say,
“and you too have come
into the world to do this, to go easy, to be
filled with light, and to shine.”

내가 나무들 사이에 있을 때

내가 나무들 사이에 있을 때,
특히 버드나무와 주엽나무,
너도밤나무와 참나무, 그리고 소나무 곁에 있을 때면
그들은 이루 말할 수 없는 기쁨의 기운을 뿜어냅니다.
나는 그들이 나를 구원한다고, 그것도 매일 구원한다고 감히 말하고 싶습니다.
나는 내가 바라는 내 모습으로부터 너무나 멀리 떨어져 있습니다.
선함과 지혜를 지니고,
결코 세상을 서둘러 스쳐 지나가지 않으며,
천천히 걷고 자주 허리 굽혀 인사하는 그런 내 모습 말입니다.
내 곁에서 나무들은 잎사귀를 뒤척이며
"잠시 머물다 가렴" 하고 부릅니다.
그들의 나뭇가지에서 빛이 흘러내립니다.
그리고 나무들은 다시 부릅니다. "아주 단순한 거란다."
"너 역시 세상에 온 것은
바로 이를 위함이야. 편안하게 나아가고,
빛으로 가득 채워져, 너 자신으로 빛나기 위해서란다."
