LAOS 2022: Sunset over Luang Prabang: As the sun dips towards the horizon a walk around the small peninsula, formed by the conjunction of the Mekong and Nam Khan River, is a memorable way to soak up the ambiance of Luang Prabang. As the shadows lengthen, and temperatures begin to cool, locals come out to walk and jog along the riverfront road. As the sun casts a late afternoon glow over the river, the boats which offer evening cruises along the Mekong begin to kick into gear. In the rainy season the conjunction of the two rivers provides an interesting spectacle; two bodies of water, differing in colour, merge together. The green of the Nam Khan flows into the brown mass of the Mekong. Continuing along the edge of the Nam Khan, late afternoon colours from the surrounding peaks, reflect off the mirror surface. Along a blocked off Sakkaline Road the night market comes to life with it’s myriad of local products on offer. Tourists and visitors quickly crowd the small thoroughfares looking for a bargain, or something unique to take home. Others push through hoping to get to the top of Phousi Hill for the sunset. As they ascend the long flight of stairs, they look back to see the golden walls of Haw Pha Bang Temple on the far side of the night market. Once the sun drops over the distant peaks, darkness quickly settles over Luang Prabang. The sunset viewers hurry back down to the night markets to grab some local food and a cold Beer Lao.
