On 5th July, 20+ volunteers walked 6+ kilometres of coastline between Pamunugama and Sarakkuwa — and collected approximately 300 bags of plastic waste from our beach. 🌊🧤

This is the coastline the fishermen go out from before dawn. A beach with centuries of history. It deserves better than what we found.

What began as a single clean-up has become something more — a community of people committed to caring for this place together. We’re making this a regular part of life in Pamunugama, and we’re just getting started.

To every volunteer who showed up, filled a bag, and stayed for the bonfire — thank you. You made this beach better. 🙏

Want to be part of the next one? Follow us and watch this space. 🌿

Our beach needs us. 🌊

We’re calling on 20 volunteers who are passionate about keeping Sri Lanka’s coastlines clean.
This is Pamunugama beach right now. Plastic, debris, and waste as far as the eye can see. It doesn’t have to stay this way.

Join us on 5th July for a community beach clean up at Driftwood, Pamunugama.

🧤 Bags and gloves provided — just bring your energy.
🔥 End the evening with a bonfire & refreshments.
🌿 Leave the beach better than we found it.

Spots are limited to 20 volunteers. DM us to register and secure your place. Let’s do this together. 💙

St. Joseph’s Church has stood watch over Pamunugama since the Portuguese first arrived on these shores, centuries before anyone thought to put this village on a map. 🕊️

Known as the Vatican of Sri Lanka, its golden dome rises above the coconut palms as it has for generations. Every year without fail, the miraculous statue of St. Joseph is carried through these streets, blessing the same fishermen, the same families, and the same coastline that have always called this place home.

To the parish of St. Joseph’s - thank you for making us a part of your community, we are blessed to be here. 🙏

Walking behind these two on the beach at Pamunugama, I remembered one of my aunts, a woman of considerable vocabulary, dismissing someone with the immortal phrase: “He’s a real pariah bugger.” I was about eight. I didn’t fully understand it, but I understood the tone. It wasn’t entirely an insult. It was an assessment.

The word pariah arrived by colonial post, borrowed from Tamil and weaponised by the British to mean beneath consideration. What they didn’t anticipate was that we’d take it, feed it some rice and curry, and make it entirely our own.

The pariah dog has been walking Sri Lankan roads since long before any empire arrived to name things improperly. He sleeps outside temples and three-star hotels with equal authority. He was named to be forgotten. Instead, he became the street, the neighbourhood, the morning, the stubborn ordinary life of a place that outlasted everyone who tried to classify it.

These two, walking ahead of me like they own Pamunugama - which, frankly, they do - are the most complete argument I’ve seen for a word’s full rehabilitation.
