Mond

Mond Mond is about getting up with the sunrise to the sound of the Indian Ocean. It’s about being barefoot all day and slowing life down.

And being tune with the moon and natures cycles. Mond is a place for people to connect and experience. Hotel • Café • Artist Residency

A year ago around this time, multifaceted Australian musician Alex Albrecht spent a week with us in Hiriketiya for a sound residency at MOND.

Out of that residency emerged Hiriketiya, an album shaped by place, exchange and temporary togetherness. During the week, we extended the invitation into a collaboration with some of our favourite Sri Lankan musicians: Dhyan Basho (sitar), Dinelka Liyanage (electronics), Pasindu Herath (saxophone) and Uvindu Perera (double bass). Their performances appear throughout the record, sampled and re-contextualised, shaping its melodic language, pacing and tone.

Much of the music was formed directly by its surroundings. Waves setting irregular rhythms against the rocks, insects bleeding into recordings at dusk, wind moving through tall grasslands, open decks overlooking the ocean.

Together with Ryan Wijayaratne, we are currently working on a short film around the residency and recently found ourselves revisiting these fragments again. Sharing a few behind-the-scenes moments from those days here.

Excited to hear the track “Hiriketiya” has been playing on Australian radio this past week, while the vinyl is currently pressing somewhere far away and slowly making its way back to the island over the coming months.

Thank you Alex and all the musicians involved for the trust, openness and generosity that shaped this residency into what it became.

You can listen to the album on Bandcamp.

Love Letter to Our Na Tree

You arrived in 2018 looking mildly unsure of yourself. Two metres tall, a handful of branches, the botanical equivalent of “I’ll see how it goes.” We left you standing in the courtyard for three weeks before committing. Not because we are negligent plant parents, but because permanence is intimidating. Also because starting MOND felt like enough responsibility for one season.

We built MOND on the smallest possible footprint. Spatially modest, existentially ambitious. No garden, no sweeping lawns, no ornamental drama. We have always seen ourselves as shelter inside a very old jungle.

And still, we wanted something that would insist on staying.

So we chose the Na, Sri Lanka’s national tree. It felt symbolic in a way that could have been heavy-handed, but somehow wasn’t. It only took one.

Today you are more than ten metres tall. Lush in a way that feels almost excessive, as if you are proving a point. Every morning there are new pink leaves. And then, every few years, you bloom theatrically for only a few days. If you know, you know.

You have become the centre without ever asking to be. Rooted inside the courtyard, stretching outward into the sky, holding shade, holding stories, holding us.

You understood the assignment.
