Often I am asked, why Mants’ebo? Mants’ebo Guest House is named after the regent Queen Mants’ebo Amelia Seeiso, the only woman ever to rule Lesotho (1940-1960)after her husband’s death. She lived on these premises with her husband, Seeiso, and his other wives, two of which were siblings. She became regent whilst awaiting Seeiso’s eldest son, Bereng, by his second wife, Mabereng,to come of age to succeed his father. Her only child,Ntsebo, could not because she was born a girl. By tradition succession is patriarchal .Bereng took over from Mants’ebo and was later crowned King Moshoeshoe II. He died in a car accident in 1996 and is succeeded by his son, Mohato, crowned King Letsie III.
In her Honour we embrace our history and offer the hospitality renowned of the Basotho. We wish to recognize women leadership in all forms and kind and invite women to stand together in the pursuit of their recognition as equals in our society.
Almost 50 years later ,Senate Masupha lost her case to succeed her father. It is not that she is not capable to undertake the responsibilities of the office. Her only sin is she is a girl. Is this right?
