The River of Life
Life is like a river.
Sometimes it ripples quietly, almost silently,
as if the days demand nothing of us for a moment.
Sometimes it flows powerfully and wildly,
carrying us along in a direction
that we would never have chosen ourselves.
Sometimes we wish the river would stand still for a moment.
That we could hold onto a moment,
a loved one, a beautiful memory,
a time when everything felt right.
But water knows no stillness.
Life flows… always onward.
I stand on the bank
and look at the water passing me by.
I do not need to understand every bend.
I do not need to know exactly where the river is going.
For somewhere beyond my understanding
lies a plan that is greater than mine.
By the will of Allah, my life flows
along banks that I sometimes choose myself
and along paths that are chosen for me.
Sometimes the water is clear and calm,
sometimes murky due to storm and rain. But even the difficult current
takes me somewhere.
I have learned that I cannot stop the river.
I cannot stop time,
cannot bring back the past,
and cannot force the future.
But I can choose how I let myself be carried along.
I can trust.
I can let go.
I can move along with what Allah puts on my path,
without completely losing my own will.
For drifting along does not mean giving up;
it sometimes means trusting
that the river will take you where you need to be.
So just let life flow.
Let the days come and go again.
Let the river find its own way.
I stand on the bank,
I look, I feel, I learn…
and when the water calls me,
I step into it.
Not because I know where the current will take me,
but because I trust in Him
who knows the river
even before I see its first bend.
Allah determines the current. I am allowed to learn to move with the flow.
And perhaps…
that is indeed the true art of life:
not trying to stop the river,
but learning to trust the current❤️
